let's go to paul vercammen at big bear lake. tell us about the surveillance video. what does it show? >> okay. that surveillance video was taken in the san diego area. it was from behind an auto parts store where there is an alley and dumpster. a man who appears to be dorner, his build, don't forget, almost unmistakable. six-feet tall, 270 pounds. this man throws some objects into the dumpster. later recovered, a magazine full of bullets, a military belt, a military helmet. and you can clearly see in the surveillance video, the truck that belonged to dorner this happened the morning after the murders in irvine, california, that dorner is tied to, including monica quan, the daughter of an ex-lapd officer. now, that truck was, of course, found later in the week burned out with a broken axle here in the big bear area and that, of course, the last sign or clue that anyone has to dorner's whereabouts, deborah. >> police are not saying very much. they are clearly looking for him. have they suggested that the magazine that's found, the belt found, something that i have bee

cnn paul vercammen is in riverside. what are you hearing there?e that they have sealed off many of the streets where the officer was killed and the officer was wounded. we now understand this investigation is shifting to big bear, california. that's because a car resembling -- excuse me. a truck resembling that of the suspect's vehicle was burned out in the big bear area and a source close to the investigation has told me they are now looking over and trying to positively match that truck be to dorner, the shooting suspect. and another clue about big bear, there's a school district up there, bear valley. it says that it closed the school today as a precaution because of, quote, an investigation in that area. big bear is about an hour and ten minutes and 70 miles from riverside. we can tell you, wolf, that we saw a number of squad cars come tearing out of here earlier in the day and they were headed in a way that would allow them to jump on the freeway and go to big bear. so that's the latest right now here in riverside. wolf? >> all right. we're g

paul vercammen from big bear, california. police were focused on that area for nearly a week. how did they finally get their break? >> reporter: well, there is no doubt in my mind, police were actually right by the very house where two maids go to clean, and then inside to their shock here is this lethal fugitive. he heads down highway 38 and two fish and wild life warden who's spot dorner closed trailing two school buss, and trying to get up on the bumper of one and use those buses as cover and then from there, they were able to chase him down to the cabin where it appears he met his demise. >> paul, we're talking about an expolice officer. we're also talking about two police officers that he is accused or believed to have killed. so what is the mood of the law enforcement there now? >> reporter: it is absolutely bittersweet. in talking to a lieutenant here on this hill, he said, look, we're not out here giving each other high fives and congratulations. we're all so saddens by the loss of these officer and the people dorper killed, not all officers, and it's hanging over us.

paul vercammen is live. police were focusing on that resort area for about a week.were, and they were combing the area, looking in empty cabins for dorner, just so many of them up here. probably to his shock, from what we understand, two maids go in to clean one of the cabins and there he is, the fugitive on the run. the man on the rampage. dorner steals their car, heads down the highway, and fish and wild life spot dorner, following two school buss, almost one of them on the bumper, using buses for cover. they radio for help. other fish and wild life officers spot the car, head toward dorner, he crashes that car, steals a pickup truck. let's listen to the fish and game department talk about what happened at that point in the story. >> the warden in front noticed a white truck driving erratically at a high rate of speed. he was drown to this erratic behavior, he took a close look at the driver and recognized him as the suspect. before he could put it out in the radio, he passed the suspect vehicle, the suspect rolled his window down and when the second patrol truck

cnn's paul vercammen is near the crash scene. paul. >> reporter: carol, when you go up to that crash scene, it is grisly, it is horrific, and it is heart-breaking. right now the coroner's office on scene trying to sort out this mess. there are bodies inside this bus. there are bodies outside this bus. there are tarps covering these bodies, and what's leading to a lot of confusion right now is some of these bodies are so close together they don't have a firm grip on just how many fatalities there are. that's why the california highway patrol has said right now they are setting a preliminary number at eight, but they say that that will undoubtedly change and will rise. also, we know that at least 27 people have been wounded, 6 of them critically, and taken to area hospitals. some of them are children, carol. right now a very active investigation, and word that we have from caltrans and others is witnesses said they saw smoking from the back of the bus, and all indications are there could have been a problem with the brakes. >> paul
