that's where paul vercammen is. paul, obviously a big group gathered where you are.here exactly are these protesters tonight? >> reporter: i will set the scene for you. this is l.a. city hall and they are on the steps of city hall. they set up here quite a few different protests merged throughout the course of the night. since you were speaking with me, it seems like it grew to another, i'd say maybe 1,000, 1200 protesters. you can see they are not only on the steps of city hall, but there's one protester who climbed on top of this light signal and he's holding up what is a common sentiment here which is "not my president." we have heard it said and chanted over and over tonight. also in front of me they are chanting "not my president." it has been a peaceful protest. we haven't seen any fights or arrests. the los angeles police department has taken a rather california laid back approach. they are allowing the protesters do what they want and not interfering for the most part. they shut down the street in front of city hall and they shut down other streets as some of

>> paul vercammen in los angeles. quite a story. danny, bring you into this.erally end. correct? the great news is, she's alive. now it shifts from a missing person's case to a potential kidnapping. what do you think police are doing right now? >> not just any kidnapping case, john. statistically, like a white antelope. very rare. as it is, ransom kidnappings, very rare in the united states. most of the time kidnappings involve parents taking children away from other parents. there was a spike in arizona in the last few years of ransom kidnappings, almost all related to the drug trade. this pure just snatched off the road adult case is comparatively rare and add to it the perpetrators may have been females. females constitute about 5% of violent predators in the united states with a weapon. the fact now, this is a very, very rare case. >> and papini herself. how do police handle questioning her? >> like anybody else. ask letter to tell her story in as much detail as she possibly can, at this point. if she's available to. now, from what we understand, they alre

cnn's paul vercammen has more for us this morning. hi, paul. >> good morning, carol.strators remain on this disputed bridge, and they're not being moved off that bridge right now by law enforcement. they've called them very aggressive. and as you pointed out, carol, at one point, the authorities used water cannons. actually they were fire hoses attached to engines, and they began to blast away the demonstrators. law enforcement officers also confirming that they used rubber bullets, and tear gas. now we do have one report from an organizer of the protest who said he believes at least 200 people have suffered from various injuries, including those blasts from those hoses, as well as a number of injuries that would be in the realm of people getting hit in the head with rubber bullets. also, there was one law enforcement officer injured. he was hit in the head with a thrown rock. authorities saying that they also were hit with rocks that were fired from sling shots, and burning logs were thrown their way. and some tribal leaders also calling out to the authorities saying

paul vercammen, thank you. let's stay on this.lyst art roderick who is a former director of the u.s. marshal service. art, nice to see you. if you're hearing about the earbuds, the phone, she's by the side of the road awith restraints. where do investigators begin? >> it's a very bizarre set of circumstances. when i first looked at this case the first thing that came to mind was the denice huskins in march of 2015 where police thought it was a hoax and she was kidnapped. she was in the captor's custody for three weeks so i'm sure she's got a lot of information she's giving to law enforcement. it's two females that abducted her apparently from the information we have at this particular point in time then she was held for three weeks. it's very bizarre circumstances all the way around. >> i guess what i'm having a hard time wrapping my head around is why law enforcement are being vague. maybe it's entirely intentional because they're close to finding who these two women are but we know she's been talking so why don't we know more ab

cnn's paul vercammen has the breaking details. what's the latest, paul?ry aggressive is how the demonstrators is being described. 100 to 200 of these demonstrators remain on this bridge where police are holding a line. authorities saying that ongoing riot at one point. the sheriff's department saying that the demonstrators threw rocks, shot rocks, and sling shots, and tossed burning logs. one officer hit on the head with a rock. no word on his condition at this time. now, authorities also responded with a water cannon, as you pointed out, and tear gas, and the standing tribal leaders medics and healers saying in 20 degree temperatures there's a risk of hypothermia. they're calling for the stop of the use of water cannons saying this could cause a risk of life. tribal leaders also saying this pipeline could destroy sacred sites. they're also worried about water contamination eventually but the backers of this $3.7 billion project say it is safe and efficient way to transport oil. >> all right, you got the politics, then you got the practicalities on the gr
