fox5's paul wagner has been following this case since the very beginning and joins us now with the storym and sarah, the medical examiner says he died from blunt force trauma. along with a combination of smoke and soot inhalation. his body discovered on january 26th under a pile of rubble inside his second floor apartment. the 66-year-old had been assaulted the night before the fire and man was arrested but at this hour d.c. police say no one has been charged with the murder. the circumstances behind the death are chilling. according to his landlord, the two had gone to see d.c. police the night before the fire in order to file a complaint. he says drug dealers had taken over his apartment and he wanted them out. that was on the 25th. but before police could act he was assaulted outside of his apartment later that night and his body discovered underneath the rubble the next morning. a note wri said, you going down. man identified asghar rhett taylor was initially charged in the assault. a charge that was later dropped and replaced with a charge of robbery. he was held for a few months be

fox5's paul wagner has tonight's rewind to the crime.inside his home last year, he was watching television in his living room. it was just after one in the morning an was facing the window that looked out on the deck in the bask of his house. we believe someone approached possibly the deck and used some kind of firearm and killed mr. delaney. apparently he had his back to the window so he may not have known whatever hit him. he was inside, i'm not necessarily sure he was sitting it's possible he could have seen outside. it's possible he didn't. we may never know that the gunfire was loud, two rapid fire bursts heard by numerous witnesses living by the home a long the river, the gunman escaping into the night. in the minutes that followed no one reported seeing any boats on the river or anyone running from the scene. the most per question looms long, especially in the days to come. the motive is what we start to look into. it's very difficult when you're dealing with someone who has been 20 years and spends most of his time in the backyar

live at fair oaks mall, paul wagner, fox5 local news. >> we have a big development tonight on a story you saw first on fox5. allegations of corruption in prince george's county public schools. today the maryland state board of education voted for a third- party investigation into these allegations. fox5 was first to tell you about claims of grade fixing and other fraud to boost the high school graduation rate. fox5's lindsay watts broke the story for us. she jiens us lie in baltimore where the state board of education met this afternoon. lindsay, what did they have to say. >>reporter: sarah, this is definitely big news from here in baltimore. it was a unanimous vote today to bring in outside, independent investigators to get to the bottom of what's been alleged in prince george's county schools. just today school ceo dr. kevin maxwell joined the calls for an investigation into his school system. it'she has asked for that. his letter to the board was read before the vote. this letter is to serve as a request for a followup investigation by the maryland state department of education int

i want to bring my colleague paul wagner who as you know has multiple sources in law enforcement.insight he can add to what's happening in this baseball field out in alexandria where multiple shots up to 50 if not more fired this morning. paul, what do you know what can you tell us? >> reporter: i just gotten off the phone with a couple of law enforcement sources. what we understand there were two capital police officers who were there as security detail for the whip. they were hit. it's unclear how badly they were hit. one has been med vacked to med star and a second helicopter is landing right now to take that second officer also to med star. it's unclear how badly they were hit at this point. i know you have been reporting that scalise was hit. my sources saying that he was hit in the hip. unclear how badly. he's been wounded. at this point, there is one person in custody, and that's about all the information that i have at the moment. but these two capital police officers were working as security and as security guard for the majority whip, and they were with him when they wer

state senator scott wagner, allegheny county businessman paul mango, and former lieutenant governor jimawley, maybe, in the offing for that job. all right, talk about the dnc, which came to our city last summer. the state appropriated $10 million in funds to help with some of the overriding costs. it's a very expensive thing to stage a convention, and our city did a beautiful job, by the way. but now there's some accountability questions. where did the $10 million go? there had been some issues about possibly bonuses being given that were inappropriate. these are the questions that now are gonna go before a committee and be heard, and former governor ed rendell is agreeing to testify, if the word's correct, or least speak to these question marks. what do you think's gonna happen on that? >> well, first of all, we know where the $10 million went. it was spent very quickly on the infrastructure that was needed to pull off the dnc. and i should say that the -- the very small group compared to other committees in other cities that put the dnc together did a fantastic job. we should pause at
