new documents that point the finger at michael cohen, paul manafort and even at the president himself. nbc's chief justice correspondent pete williams has been following it for us. good morning. >> michael cohen and paul manafort will soon be sentenced. this morning we have a flurry of new court filings from the prosecutors on whether they have been so helpful they should be treated leniently. robert mueller praises cohen as useful but says manafort is still lying. robert mueller's prosecutors say michael cohen met seven times about questions central to their investigation of russian investigation meddling, including information about attempts by russians to reach the trump campaign as early as november 2015, including one unidentified person who offered, quote, synergy on a government level and proposed a meeting between donald trump and vladimir putin. >> cohen has been useful to mueller. the special counsel's office makes that clear. it looks like cohen gave special council information helpful to the investigation. >> new york prosecutors tougher on cohen saying he should get a prison sentence of three years. they said he held to

as for paul manafort, he connells to lie to investigators. with me now chief justice correspondent pete williamsorning to you, pete. it he's implicated in a felony for hush money paid to two women who had sex with the president. >> this is what cohen has pleaded guilty to, to violating campaign finance laws by paying these women. these were, in essence, contributions to the campaign and exceeded how much an individual could give to a campaign. this is basically the same point cohen made when he pleaded guilty in august. the same information was in the information called the guilty plea document. this just formalizes it in the sentencing memorandum. the question is did president trump understand this would violate the campaign finance laws? did he understand what was happening here. it certainly takes it beyond what the president said before, that he didn't know about the payments. what cohen is saying he was well aware of it and did it because the president told him to. this is contained in the court documents filed by the prosecutors in new york, not robert mueller's prosecutors. it does raise

william, that is a comprehensive look at that. as you mentioned, we have this second mueller filing tonight having to do with paul manafort. re going to take a look at' that and come back to you at the end of the program to find out what's in there. thk you, william. >> woodruff: so let's dig a little deeper into the legal questions here, with jessica roth. she's a law professor at yeshiva university, and a former federal prosecutor for the southern district of new york. ssica roth, i think you have been listening to william brangham's report and i'm sure you've had a chance to take a look at thesefilings that have come one, two, three. maybe not the latest one but certainly the first two from southern district and then from robert mueller. what do you see here that tells us anything more about the president's role in all this? >> well, what we seecertainly, is a contrast between the two filings, one fr the southern district and one from the special counsel'soffice, and the filings from the special counsel's office makes it clear. thatohen has provided information about four areas that have been enumerated, some of which ar

illinois had two important senators part of this mix, paul douglas and everett dirkson, george mcgovern, congressman, and william fulbright. jut an amazing cast of characters, and as i was reading one account, very vivid account of washington on the eve of the inaugural about the trains pull interesting town and it was written by fairly junior reporter for "the new york times" called david halberstam who has six or seven major books out there. the "washington post" had a young beat reporter who was assigned outside of kennedy's house in georgetown. it was cold and bitter and he was -- every article was grump belling and vardonic, his name was tom wolfe. and he has about six or seven major books out there, too? so these are character the cast of charactered that is quite remarkable. kennedy and eisenhower are interesting, i think in their own right but particularly interesting as almost mirror opposites of each other. they're just so wildly different personalities. and eisenhower, i will say, was the one character who surprised me in my research. a much more interesting and complex and compelling person than i th
