i want to bring in cnn's paula hancocks with more information. paula, what can you tell us? >> well, just looking through that statement that you referenced just a moment ago just to put this into perspective to give the timings of what happened and what we actually know at this point. so 7:24 a.m. local time just over five hours ago is when the plane lost contact. now we understand from this statement that the air craft was in the indonesian flight information region. at that point you'd assume that indonesian air space. it did take until 7:54 a.m. 24 minutes until they contacted the singapore air traffic control. that's when they were notified. so they were in the indonesian air traffic control earlier. it took 20 minutes before they contacted singapore. now this flight should have taken under two hours. i understand it's about one hour, 50 minutes usually. it's flights northwest from indonesia up to singapore. it should have landed at around about 8:30 a.m. local time. now that's about four hours ago, more than four hours ago. as time goes on there are further concerns ab

cnn's paula hancocks is joining us from indonesia. latest. >> reporter: the search is winding down. we have not seen helicopters or planes come in here from the search and rescue operation in the past couple of hours. we can see the end of the second day, the search operation at least is winding down. the ships can stay on the water. they can put spotlights on. it is very difficult to see anything in pitch darkness. i spoke to the first marshal in charge of the search and rescue operation on belitung island. this is the closest area where the plane lost contact with the air traffic controllers. it is still 240 nautical miles by 240 nautical miles. he said they don't have the data to be able to hone in on a particular location. as soon as they have that they will do it. i also asked him does he think there is a possibility of survivors. he said if the plane landed or crashed into the water, it is highly unlikely. he told me this several hours ago. he said it is possible if it managed to crash on land. there are jungles to the east of h

let's go to cnn's paula hancocks. she joins us now from seoul. paula, what more can you tell us?a, details are fairly scarce at this point, obviously. airasia is desperately trying to find out what has happened to this flight. they haven't given us many details, as they're clearly unable to. all they can confirm is the fact that this flight from surabaya in indonesia to singapore did lose contact with air traffic control at 7:24 a.m. local time. now, that's about four hours ago. and according to some reports, it should have reached singapore a couple of hours ago, but hasn't at this point. now, we do know there's a search and rescue operation in progress. we're hearing this from airasia themselves. they say they're cooperating fully in trying to assist this rescue service and that they will give more information just as soon as they can. now, there are some reports out there that we can't confirm at this point suggesting that the pilot had requested to descend because of turbulence, had requested an unusual route. now, we don't know at this point whether or not that is correct. w

let's go to paula who joins us from seoul. you are there closely following the situation. what are you hearing now. >> reporter: on at this point they don't know what has happened. they know that a search and rescue operation is under way under the guidance of the indonesian civil aviation authority obviously that was in indonesian air space when contact was lost with this flight. the latest statement we do have from air asia indonesia gives us really more details of who was on board. 162 people were onboard 155 of them are passengers. we know that most of them, the vast majority, 157 are indonesian. one from singapore, one from malaysia and three from south korea. now within this statement as you say, we have heard that the pilot onboard that flight did request a change in the flight plan which had been preore daned because of en route weather. that's all we know. they say when he made that request and then commune kaicat was lost. that's something investigators will be looking at very closely. of course the concern is that it is well over 5 1/2 hours since that flight wa

let's go now to paula hancocks. she joins us from indonesia where some of the searches are being launched from. and what are you being told about how it's going to be conducted? >> caller: well just in the last half hour we've seen one of the indonesian helicopters take off. this airport here is really where some of the military and search and rescue helicopters are coming to refuel. so it's becoming a staging area. this island north of the capital, jakarta. and it's the island that is believed to be the closest to where the airline lost contact with the officials. so it's believed to be close to where this airline could be at this point. now obviously, the pilots on board are desperately trying to find any sign of this plane. one of them did tell me that they simply didn't really know if they were looking in the right place. in the moment they're heading north-northwest of here towards singapore which is where this aircraft was heading to when it went missing. the most important thing is at this point, is to get as

we want to turn to paula in indonesia. what else do we know paula? search throughout the night. they have spotlights. in pitch black in the java sea, it's not ideal conditions to be looking for remnants of this plane. so of course at first light tomorrow on tuesday morchning is when this search will continue once again. this island is basically one of the islands closest to the last known location of this plane. we've been seeing helicopters coming in throughout the day and planes coming to refuel debrief, find out where they need to go next. that's the crucial part. it's a very large area that the search and rescue operation is undertaking. 240 by 240 nautical miles. according to the head of the search and rescue effort at the airport, he says they haven't managed to narrow it down at all. they're still looking at the wide area. they don't have the data to know where the location is of this plane. they're coordinating off into sections trying to be systemic so they don't miss or overlap areas. there are a number of ships and in daylight areas a numb

paula, what's the latest there?> reporter: jake, this is really the first-stop hospital for those victims. we're on the west coast of borneo here. and just as you say, in the last hour, two more bodies were brought into the hospital here. sirens announced their arrival. there were red cross workers, hospital workers awaiting the two ambulances. the body bags were then rushed in on gurneys into a special wing of the hospital where they'll be treated and identified. this is really the preliminary identification they'll ascertain the gender, the height, looking at facial recognition, looking at any identifying marks. remember, just recently, the families were asked to give all that information. they were asked to give recent photos of their loved ones exactly for this purpose. now, we're being told by the hospital director also what they're doing is they have representatives of five different religions saying a prayer over the body because they don't know what religion that victim is following. at that point, the body
