paula, any new information? >> well, paula, we are waiting. we wait to see when those four israeli hostages will first be seen and when they will be handed over to the international red cross. we did hear earlier this morning a couple of hours ago, hamas saying that that there was some discrepancy on the prisoner release list, some error in names is the way they put it that that israel was going to be releasing in return for these four israeli hostages and that they were seeking clarification from mediators. now it's the potential that that that is what we are waiting on at this point. those final clarifications of exactly which prisoners will be released. we know, though, according to this cease fire deal, that there will be some 200 palestinian prisoners released as part of this phase of the deal. this second hostage release day, many of them are serving life sentences, many also serving lengthier sentences. and we understand that some of those individuals will not be released to the west bank or to gaza, but to a deported to a third country

joining us now live is defense attorney paula canny. paula, great to see you and thanks for joining us. let's get right to it. so they had the arraignment that was supposed to happen today. can you describe to us what that process is like and what will likely happen today at an arraignment? the defendant is told what the charges are. they should appear with their lawyer. i mean, i'm sure it's been a horrible day for her because she didn't know that she had been indicted until yesterday when that was announced. i'm sure that they notified her. she's probably just been fingerprinted and gone through all of the booking procedures. she's going to be told you're charged. she's got to be scared and frightened because getting prosecuted is really frightening. so she should be with her lawyer. her lawyer will enter a plea of not guilty. they'll set new court dates. it's pretty much a ministerial. it's like the start of a long, long, long process. she's going to enter a plea of not guilty, and they'll decide about her custodial status. i'm sure

as paula was just saying there. but interesting in that letter that paula was reading, if we break that down a little bit more, they're saying that these career officials cannot be trusted to implement the president's agenda. very interesting words there. of course, the department of justice has long been viewed separately. it is not the president's lawyers, but that language certainly reflects what the president believes. and, jake, thinking back to what president trump still believes his biggest mistake was in his first term is appointing jeff sessions as the attorney general. of course, he recused himself in the russia investigation, and it went downhill from there. so since that moment, the president has been intent on remaking the justice department in his own vision. he wants someone who is loyal to him. and this is also coming, this cleaning of house, if you will, is coming right before pam bondi is going to have a vote in the senate and likely will be confirmed. so it seems to me like trying to get some busi

paula hancocks in abu dhabi, thank you so much. i want to bring in now jeremy diamond, who is live at hostage square in tel aviv. jeremy, the sight of so much emotion as the images of those four hostages being released was shown to the people there. take us through what you saw. >> again. yeah. people here have been following every twist and turn of. >> this release. >> from the moment when we. >> saw those first live images inside palestine square in gaza of hamas, you know, setting up the stage, setting the scene for this very dramatic, clearly propaganda filled release of these four captive israeli soldiers. we then saw as those four captives were released by hamas, were put on a stage first smiling and waving at the crowd that was there, clearly still very much under duress in their final moments of captivity. and then, as they were taken into those red cross vehicles and as the news broke here that they had crossed into israeli territory, we heard people once again erupt in cheers. moments ago, the crowd here was listening to

paula. and recall, they have been making the argument ever since the supreme court handed down an opinion about immunity of what a president could be held immune from for so-called official acts. the trump team has been fighting very hard to suggest that some of what came in in this underlying trial was about conduct relating to official acts. the judge has been unconvinced by this premise, but certainly they are hoping for the supreme court ultimately to still have their appellate insight into all these matters. paula, when you're looking at this case compared to, say, the jack smith involved, matters we've heard about earlier in the week, this is one of the cases that no matter whether he's the president or not, he has no pardon power here. he can't make this go away. >> yeah, that's exactly right. and that's one of the things that frustrates him. but you talked really about what's going to happen next, which is they're going to continue to appeal this based on the supreme court's decision

paula hancocks just an emotional day, as you say, on both sides. now, the question has to be asked about the next phase. so we're seeing so far these conditions being met on both sides were progressing towards that second phase question. now will we get there and will we progress past that second phase? what is the dynamic right now? >> well, there are no guarantees. is that is the simple answer. kim. there are no guarantees that this three phase deal will progress to to the second phase. there will be 33 hostages in return for hundreds of palestinian prisoners released in this first stage. there were another five weeks of this. it was going to be six weeks in all. and from day 16 or around that time, hamas and israel are expected to come back to the indirect negotiating table with mediators to secure the next phase of the deal. this is expected to be the harder part of this entire negotiation process, and nobody would suggest that it has been easy up until this point. it has taken well over a year to be able to see what we are seeing today. but fo

cnn's paula hancocks is live in abu dhabi. and paula, underscoring just how fragile this is. we've heard that missiles have been launched from yemen at tel aviv. what more are we learning? >> well, kim, yes, it does remind you that this is about more than just hamas and israel. securing this cease fire. this happened just about two hours ago, and there were sirens across jerusalem and tel aviv areas in between. the israeli defense forces saying that they intercepted a missile from yemen's houthi rebels, saying that they didn't have any reports at this point of damage from debris from the the interception. it does remind you, though, that there are more players involved in this. now. we have heard from the houthis. they have said in the past that as soon as there is a ceasefire in gaza, then they will stop firing. they have been firing not just against israel, but also against shipping in the red sea. so as of tomorrow, sunday, we will be able to see if that is in fact the case. but if everything does go to plan, then this time tomorrow there will be no bombs falling in gaza.

paula reid reporting for us. paula, thank you very much. our legal experts are here with me in the situation room. let's get some serious analysis. we'll start with laura coates, the special counsel's this report being blocked by judge. the judge? judge cannon is again giving trump a rather favorable ruling right now. why is she preventing this report, which normally would be standard operating procedure for the u.s. justice department? why is she blocking it from being released? >> that seems to be two primary reasons. one is she believes that because he's an illegitimate special counsel, anything that he gathered as a part of his work also can't be used now to kind of go through a back door and say, i'm not legitimate. >> but here's everything i learned while i was illegitimate. >> the second argument, of course, is that it will prejudice the two people who still have remaining cases. yes, trump's case is no longer active down there, but he still has two codefendants known as coconspirators. they take issue with that assessment because th

paula reid is out front. and paula, so what more can you tell us about the judge's ruling? >> look, erin, when we were covering this trial about a year ago, this is not how i would have expected this all to play out. but once trump was was reelected, this seemed like the natural progression of things. as you noted, he continues to be a convicted felon. but here the judge signaling that he is not going to face any penalties. and that's notable because, as the judge says, he could have imposed a jail sentence here. but in his opinion today, judge juan merchan saying, quote, it seems proper at this juncture to make known the court's inclination to not impose any sentence of incarceration. so really, this sentencing next friday, it will be largely performative. another thing i thought was really interesting in here is that merchan really, really seems to concede the point that trump's lawyers have been making about the fact that he is president elect and how that should impact this case. he says, quote, to assuage the defendant's concerns regarding the mental and physical deman

let me go straight to paula reid, who is here in washington with me. paula, what do we know? >> jim, huge news out of the supreme court as the justices uphold a controversial ban on the social media app tiktok. now, the justices signaled that they would uphold this ban. several days ago, when they had oral arguments. this all started last year in april, when congress, with broad bipartisan support, said that the app would be banned if it didn't divest from its parent company, bytedance, because of concerns over that company's ties to china. it's a national security concern that has been expressed by presidents of both parties, specifically, the concern is that this app is collecting data, massive amounts of data from all of its users, and then potentially that data could be used by the chinese government, especially in the event of a crisis, to to sow discord in this country or otherwise jeopardize national security. now tiktok, they were challenging this ban, arguing that this was a violation of the first amendment. and when they heard arguments a few days ago, it's a rare d

paula. yes, paula. so this. >> certainly shows that. >> there is activity.is in the in. >> the. >> palestine square. >> of gaza city. and what we are seeing is potentially dozens, maybe more of hamas fighters that have gathered in this particular area. you can see them that they are masked, they are armed as well, many of them holding the hamas flag. and it appears as though they are preparing for this hostage release. now, this is just happened in the last few minutes or so. they are in this particular square. you can see the white cars there, the white trucks, they are believed to be hamas cars are some of them have the flag on as well. and certainly it appears as though this is the preparation for the release of those four female israeli soldiers that you mentioned there. the four soldiers who were at the nahal oz military base back on october 7th, 2023, when they were taken hostage. now, we also saw them back in may. there was a video that the families of those women agreed to be released to the public, which showed them standing against a wall. it showe

paula, i'm going to start with you. just give us some sense of what you're expecting today, what you are focusing in on, and what you think will be focused in, on, on the hill. >> well, bondi has kept a remarkably low profile given the job that she is interviewing for today. this is not just a cabinet position. this is the cabinet position because president elect trump has made it clear that he wants to leverage this agency to pursue his political enemies. now, sources tell me that bondi has been preparing for weeks for tough questions from this committee. she's met with lawmakers from both parties. and look, she's coming into today with three decades of law enforcement experience. for eight years, she was the attorney general of the state of florida. in her opening statement, she says she, quote, wants to make america safe again. i'm sure that she would prefer that much of today's hearing focus on the bread and butter work of the justice department, recent terrorist attacks remind us that the justice department is alwa

paula, thank you very much. paula mentioning the premier of ontario doug ford.e is back with me now. and premier ford, paula talking about your response today. so when trump today said many people in canada love being the 51st state, he put the word "love" in all caps. "together what a great nation it would be. " respond to that? on a certain level it was a joke. now here we are and justin trudeau is gone and your finance minister is gone, the entire government has sort of gone into chaos. all on the back of these things trump has said. so when trump says this today about the 51st state, how do you respond? >> well, i can appreciate his sense of humor. and i kind of went back about buying alaska. but you know something, it's just not realistic. we're a sovereign country. we're proud yands canadians just like americans are proud. what i want to make sure is we build a fortress, making sure we're the strongest and richest and most prosperous two countries in the entire world. we have a tremendous amount to offer the united states as we have over the years, no matt

so, paula, what more can you tell us about why these prosecutors were fired and if they have any recourse? >> well, they say that these officials cannot be trusted to implement trump's agenda. look, i've been talking to trump's legal advisers for years, and they have a deep distrust of career officials at the justice department. but there is an especially strong disdain for anyone who worked with jack smith. they believe that trump was treated unfairly by his team, should have been granted more deference. i mean, that disdain is stronger than anything i have seen in any of the other trump investigations. but look, smith and most of his top prosecutors, they've already left the justice department. so today's move, we learned it impacts over a dozen officials, but these are career officials. they are supposed to be protected from political retaliation across administrations. so the fact that they are fired here likely violates their civil service protections, and they likely have legal recourse. >> caitlin. i mean, what does the white house say to the pushback? i mean, these were prosecutor

and if anything, avenues wise, when it comes to potentially responding to this with lawsuits. >> paula, there's also, as you mentioned, this so-called special project that's been launched by the trump appointed interim u.s. attorney in d.c. to investigate prosecutors who handled some of the january 6th rioters cases. what do we know about that? i mean, who are they targeting? >> so here, the interim u.s. attorney in washington is looking at prosecutors who charged january 6th rioters with obstruction of justice. this is a charge that was used in a few hundred of the cases. last year, the supreme court ruled that that charge can't be used related to january 6th, that it was actually a designed to mean people who tried to interfere with congressional investigations and withhold or obstruct documents. they said, you can't use that in this context. but now the trump justice department is asking for emails, documents, notes, anything related to those decisions to prosecute individuals with this charge. one administration official tells me they need to get to the bottom of, quote, poor decis

paula, you first. justin trudeau is stepping down, resigning as the liberal party in canada. at the helm of 11 years. is this the case of trudeau jumping before he was pushed? >> absolutely. he said look, i can't possibly fight what will be an incredibly difficult election campaign for a government that's almost a decade old if i have to continually fight these internal battles. now, look, there have been a long list of scandals as well as some achievements that he outlined there. but again, so many members of his own government coming to him and saying, we don't believe that you can beat conservative leader, conservative party leader in the next election, an election that has to be held by the end of the year. and pam, as i've been saying all morning, stop me when this sounds familiar, this really leaves his party in a tough squeeze. the polls already indicate that they are more than 20 percentage points behind, and now they're going to have this succession battle and it will be rough with a lots of different people putting their hat in the ring. in the meantime, you have ÷÷

paula noted that certainly is an avenue that we could see. these prosecutors go down, given the protections that they do enjoy. so the question is how the justice department is going to handle that, because it's being run by an acting attorney general right now. pam bondi has not been confirmed. but what's fascinating about this is just the level to which trump's legal team knows all of these people. i mean, a lot of them have been in the courtroom with the attorneys who are now going to go into the upper echelons of the justice department. trump has hired several of his own personal attorneys to go in and top positions, not just the deputy attorney general, but also right underneath that emil bove, who has been currently. we shouldn't arrest, but all these other trump attorneys who are going into the administration, who have been in the same room, the same courtroom as a lot of these prosecutors who were working for jack smith's team. and so, paula has a point there that they absolutely do not trust them and do not believe they can continue

they are hopeful but they are nervous at he may not pardon everyone. >> paula, you have new reporting for us. tell us about it. >> we got a response from judge juan merchan, the judge overseeing the manhattan hush money case where trump was convicted of falsifying business records. trump has been trying to get the sentencing scheduled for friday delayed. the judge has rejected the request. so unless another judge stays the sentencing, as of now, trump is scheduled to be sentenced this friday in new york. trump did get a concession out of judge merchan last week who said look, i know there are a lot of demands, both physical and mental on your time as president-elect. so you can appear virtually. he has made it clear that he is not going to sentence trump to any jail time or really any penalties. but this is significant because earlier today the trump team tried to get the sentencing delayed. >> all right, thank you to all of you. i want to bring in someone who was at the capitol on january 6th, retired officer harry dunn. thank you for being here. so first of all, when you hear people

paula, let me start with you. how significant is this?>> it's significant because it means the public could get to see jack smith's report detailing investigative decisions he made in his election interference investigation. >> he had these two cases right. one into trump's alleged election interference, one into trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents. >> that classified documents report is not getting out anytime soon. that's still an active case. so what we're focused on is the january 6th report. and, casey, i also want to emphasize that the only thing that the two sides of this case have ever agreed on in the past three years is that there's really not a lot of news inside this report. we've had the january 6th committee. they had a report. trump was indicted. there was also a big court filing in october related to this case that did something extraordinary, revealed a lot of evidence that usually isn't disclosed before trial. so really, what the fight is about right now is about the legitimacy of jack smith. that's what
