paula hancock is standing by in seoul. paula, what are you seeing on the ground in terms of action and what are you hearing? >> reporter: well, we're hearing from the defense ministry at this point via ytn that they believe it launched at 7:30 a.m. this morning and they have dispatched helicopters and also ships into the waters between china and south korea to try and find the debris. that was something they had intended to do from the beginning. this is very important to the south koreans and also, of course, to the u.s., which is stationed here in south korea. they want to find out exactly what the makeup of this rocket was and any kind of indication they can have about this rocket from that debris. now, it's not an easy thing to do to find this kind of debris in such a vast amount of water. much of it could have broken up on the way down. but what we know at this point is they have two military vessels that are parading those waters at this point, trying to find any indication of that debris. we also know that this rocke

cnn's paula hancocks is in seoul, south korea. tell us more. >> reporter: well, carol, the concern that south korea has, at this point, is that north korea may actually be preparing for a third nuclear test. there's a south korean intelligence officials report which cnn has obtained which says there is evidence of a freshly dug tunnel in the area of north korea where two of these nuclear tests have been carried out before. now, they have shown us satellite imagery which shows that there is a tunnel in the final stages of being built. earth and sand around the entrance. the report says the past few weeks increasing in size so they do believe there could be a third nuclear test after this rocket launch that north korea will be carrying out it says in the next few days. now, the intelligence source says this would be a grave provocation and what north korea might do is wait for the international condemnation that is sure to come after this satellite launch and then use that as an excuse to carry out a third nuclear launch. certainly
