cnn's paula newton is in ottawa with more. so, paula, what's expected?test as billed? >> reporter: well, i think at this point everything so far looks like it will be peaceful instead of dozens of trucks, fred, there are hundreds out there. this is complete gridlock here in ottawa at this moment with thousands of people, and, again, hundreds of those tractor-trailers out there. and, yes, this started out as actually a protest the truckers were doing against a vaccine mandate. but it really just touched a nerve here, fred. so many people have now held on to this, and they've gotten really some high-profile support. elon musk, the head of tesla, tweeting out his support, saying "canadian truckers rule." but more than that, this was a certain minority for sure, fred, but vocal groups saying they were protesting those public health measures in canada. the fear is that organizations like the anti-hate network point out they are afraid this could tip over into violence. they have been certainly monitoring things online. i want you to listen to one thing they p

cnn's paula newton is in ottawa for us. paula, what is the situation today? got back from the protests, as close as i could get. the downtown streets are still gridlocked. a lot of enthusiasm there as well today, fred. yesterday perhaps we had more people and more rigs but city of ottawa police are really doing a good job of trying to keep it contained to the downtown core. it's gridlock. that means a lot of the stores have had to close and, as you just described, there have been some disturbing moments. the one on the war memorial, there was making the rounds on social media. that disturbed many. just to remind everyone. this was to be a truck er's mandate protest. they were protesting the mandate to get vaccinated. that applies not just in canada but in the u.s. they started this cross-country voyage and that's when it touched a nerve with so many canadians that said we're fed up with these public health restrictions. take a look at what some of them said. >> here for the future of canada. >> you can't lock up healthy people and expect them to remain health

paula newton has the story for you. >> reporter: this started out as a truckers protest, right.e freedom convoy, and they started from all parts around canada. they wanted to gather here in the capital ottowa, to protest a vaccine mandate that was put in not just by canada, but by the biden administration. that went into effect earlier this month. but this has turned into so much more. it's really touched a nerve with a significant minority in canada who say enough is enough. they are against vaccine mandates, against mask mandates, they are against public health measures. and so they grouped here in ottowa, the question now is when are they going to leave. police say they would like this protest to end. there are still wall to waukegan rigs in the downtown core. few protesters, but still a significant number. at issue now is how to get them out of the city or convince them to leave. and they continue to say they are going to stay here until their demands are met. no sign of that. prime minister justin trudeau remains at a disclosed location for the safety of his family. he live
