paula newton joins us on the phone. what can you tell us? >> reporter: jim, it is quite concerning for those in the communities where this apparently happened but far beyond. police say it's a mass stabbing. it does appear that some victims they believe right now have been targeted but others machb random. they are looking for two suspects and may be in a black nissan rogue. this is why this situation is unsettling. they had told people in the area to shelter in place. this is a holiday weekend. many people out and about. given the way this happened in such a sudden way they had calls of injuries with stabbings. some people showed up at local medical facilities for treatment and doesn't seem as though they putt this together and named the suspects for quite a bit of time and given the fact they are at large many people unnerved. especially because they have already perhaps traveled over a wide area. i don't have to tell you how rare this would be in canada and some witnesses that have spoken of it traumatized how this could happen. no firear

cnn's paula newton is live in ottawa. we learning more, paula, about the manhunt and the motive behind the stabbing? >> reporter: yeah, in fact, we are, victor. just in the last hour, police in saskatchewan issued another alert, so everybody got them on their phones, especially in james smith cree nation, that community you were just discussing, people were told to shelter in place because they had reports of a possible sighting of myles sanderson, and as you said, he remains a man that police consider armed and dangerous. this is so unnerving for the community, victor. it was one of the reasons that the community was essentially on lockdown. it had established a state of emergency until at least the end of the month. people in that community described to me how terrified they were and why they didn't want to speak out, because they were afraid he was still there. i want you to listen now to police, the rcmp in saskatchewan, really describe the kind of individual myles sanderson is and the danger he poses. listen. >> myles

let's begin in canada with cnn's paula newton with more on this manhunt and also more information on the attacks. paula? >> reporter: yeah, absolutely, erica. unfortunately in the last hour the police chief in regina, saskatchewan, about three and a half hours from where these crimes took place, believed to be the last sighting of the suspects. the update from the police chief there not good. he says look, at this point these suspects have not been apprehended, and more than that he's clearly reaching out to the public to give them tips as to the whereabouts of these suspects which suggest that they do not have a lot of leads coming in at this time, and just to recap, again, this could end up being one of the worst mass killings in canadian history. two suspects now still on the run, miles and damion sanderson. i will point out that there's no identify if they are related in any way, and they also don't have clear motives for what have been absolutely grotesque and vicious attacks, both targeted police say and ran do. they have a lot of law enforcement on this right now. alerts are ou

cnn's paula newton is live in ottawa. what's the latest? >> reporter: we just received a statement from rcmp in saskatchewan, and sadly there are ten deceased and 18 people who are injured and still getting medical attention. the headline is they remain at large and police forces are bringing as many resources as they can to bear to the situation. as you said, the alert going out to three provinces, but a lot of the search going on in the capital, about a three and a half hour drive away from where the initial crimes occurred. i want to bring us now to the statement from the assistant commanding officer there, and she says to the people of saskatchewan and beyond, please be assured that we are using every human, investigational and technological resource we have available to locate and arrest those responsibility for this fraj tragedy. they say they should have more information in the hours ahead. they say by no shape or form are these charges exhausted, but both have now been charged with at least one count of first-degree murder. in fact,

. >> reporter: paula newton in ottawa is reporting that one of the suspects, damien sanderson, was charged of ten people, was found dead today on the james smith creek nation reservation. that is the same area where the majority of the victims were attacked. damien sanderson was found in a grassy area close to a house that was being looked at by authorities. police say that damien sanderson's injuries are not believed to be self-inflicted, but we're getting more information as we go on that. the royal canadian mounted police says his brother, a fellow suspect, myles sanderson, may have sustained injures as well. myles sanderson, 31 years old. even if miles sanderson is injured, he could still be very dangerous. his status as far as whether he's been captured or not, unclear right now. myles sanderson has a lengthy criminal record that involved property crimes as well. the two men are wanted in connection with a horrific stabbing spree that left ten people dead, at least 18 injured on or near that reservation in saskatchewan. all this unfolding yesterday. authorities saying at one point the
