i'm paula newton.ching "cnn newsroom." now, the losses of life and property from hurricane ian are so staggering along florida's gulf coast that no one can yet quantify just how devastating its truly been. now, countless vacation homes, hotels, businesses, boats, vehicles, you can see there simply vanished after the category 4 storm made landfall wednesday. and now one analysis predicts the insured losses in the state will be nearly $50 billion. tragically florida's death toll continues to climb as search and rescue teams comb through mountains of debris for more victims. ian is now a post-tropical cyclone, and that was after making landfall again in south carolina. so far at least 45 storm related fatalities have been confirm but officials fear the final tally could be in the hundreds. the u.s. coast guard says many people are still stranded by deep water. listen to this. >> what we're finding is that many of the people are -- are not critically injured and they're not in immediate distress, but they'

i'm paula newton. in this hour thousands of americans in the carolinas are braving the wrath of a very powerful storm. yes, it is still powerful. post-tropical cyclone ian is making its way inland at this hour after slamming into south carolina as a hurricane. even though the storm has been downgraded, officials warn it still threatens the area with storm surges, heavy rain, and strong winds. in fact, it has already caused considerable damage in parts of south carolina. you see it in this video. that storm ripping through a pier causing part of it to collapse. now, it also submerged this neighborhood with a strong storm surge that, in fact, was several feet high. it was so bad this man -- it was so bad this man had to wade through knee-deep water inside his own home. thankfully the water there is starting to recede, and some areas in the state have been spared the worst. but in florida the damage has been severe. at least 45 people have now lost their lives and hundreds of homes have been turned, well,

paula newton is in brazil for us. how did this come to a run-off?short answer, fred, this was a very close race. and for that reason, no one got a 50 plus 1 vote so we're into this second round, and really all of that belies the division that has occurred in this country as this campaign has continued. i want to tell you right now, we're at a high school, and again, it has been calm. it has been fairly organized in the polling stations we have seen. but again, there is that tension about what the result will bring. i'll let you take a look here. one of the things here in brazil that is different is the fact that it is all electronic. there are no backup paper ballots. that gives some people a huge vote of confidence. other people believe that it does not allow for a recount to happen. that is just one of the issues, fred, in what have been a very contentious campaign. i want you to listen now, though, to people we spoke to at the polls this morning, and fred, you'll be able to relate. this has been such a tension-filled campaign. so toxic, that so m

cnn's paula newton has our story. >> reporter: campaigning here in brazil in the second round of thential campaign has been just as acrimonious and contentious as the first. in terms of the vote on sunday, each camp, whether lulu supporters or bolsonaro supporters, many agree on a couple of things. one, it's incredibly tense leading to the vote sunday. but also, that despite many polls that have been published, it is really impossible to know the outcome. we got that opinion as well from bolsonaro's son, take a listen. >> the polls are tight. but if we look for the first round, the polls were wrong. >> reporter: supporters of bolsonaro have been complaining misinformation, censorship, the fact that they have been, in their words, muzzled through this campaign, may actually affect the voting or the end result. we should say bolsonaro and his supporters say they will accept the election result even if they lose. and that has been a pivotal issue in this campaign. lulu supporters here at a certain point are seeing new hope, though. they are looking to erase the legacy of bolsonaro if lu

cnn's paula newton is live in sao paulo on this. what are you hearing about this today? >> reporter: i wish we were hearing anything, kate. and so does the entire country of brazil. we're in our 14th hour of the results being called. the electoral officials here saying this is a fair election. it definitely was a credible vote. and they are saying that at this point in time, they still do not know if the president bolsonaro will concede and accept the results and try to challenge the results. he said in the past few days that he would accept the democratic vote here in brazil. and yet for weeks, months, some says years, he's been laying the groundwork to delegitimize those votes if he lost. kate, stop me when this sounds familiar. having said that, you just mentioned lula da silva. this is such a comeback. he called this a pole resurrection. think about it. he was president for two terms prior. he was in prison less than three years ago. sitting in a prison cell on corruption charges, those charges were thrown out and here he is again. the president of the brazil. he has
