so mike let's bring cnn's paula newton. she has covered the situation in haiti for us. paula, what more have you been to learn about the woman and her child abducted in haiti? >> we learn from the organization that posted on their website that the directors life as you just said, was there, as a community nursery she's originally from new hampshire. both she and her child were abducted right from the campus. what this usually means, a lot of those charities or schools operate within a compound. this was close to the capitol . they were directly abducted from there. cnn did receive a statement from the u.s. state department saying they were aware of these objections and stated that they have obviously front and center to try to get them to safety and are working with local agencies. as you know so well, the situation in haiti continues to be quite brave. it was within the last week that we had the u.s. say to americans that it was time to leave urgently. the situation was becoming too volatile. for many months now, haitians, all over the country, especially there, have be

paula newton was in haiti earlier this month and following the story for us. what are u.s.ing to try to find her and her child? >> well all they can. but you could imagine how difficult it is. they say that they are in contact with haitian authorities. and that includes police and government authorities. but the truth is, they don't have any control over this country. least of which the capital, about 80% is by the government's own admission now in the hands of gangs. the u.n. said the same. it is extremely violent and kidnappings have been a problem for a while. now, this nurse from new hampshire and her child, what is so alarming is that sthethey we taken from the charity and i tell you they have a compound and security and they assume they're safe, right. these facilities for the charities are within the compound. so the charity itself in a statement said, look, they were taken directly from the christian community service is what they're saying. but this is a person apparently, the charity said, who knew all of the risks but decided that she had to help patients and was

paula newton, cnn, lakai, haiti. >> joining me now is jacqueline charles, caribbean correspondent forthe miami herald." thanks so much for being here with us. so as we just heard, kidnappings, killings, sexual violence are on the rise. haiti seems on the brink. how precarious is the situation right now? >> well, the situation is precarious. we saw a little bit of as r respite, just about a month or two ago after some vigilante killings. what happened, the population was taking this shall of security into their own hands. they were blocking off roads, they were actually hunting down alleged, you know, gang members and the united nations put out some statistics on how many people, you know, has been killed in these vigilante killings, saying this is not the way to go. but i just recently came from haiti not long ago. and what you started to see is indeed, kidnappings have returned. we're starting to hear more about, you know, incidents of violence. and so there is concern that we are now going right back to where we were just a couple of months ago. >> that's sad to hear. the problem, o
