joining me now is cnn's paula newton. aula, i believe you were just at this airport shortly before the incident. what were the conditions like when you were there? >> yes, indeed i was, phil. so i must have taken off from that airport, you know, a little bit over an hour for this plane had its hard landing. i will say i've been through that airport maybe over a thousand times in my life, and i have never seen that much snow in the last week. they have had probably over a foot of snow there at toronto pearson. the winds were incredibly ferocious, especially when it started gusting and you could see a lot of snow blowing around on top of that. when it did hit the ground, you could tell it was incredibly icy. the temperatures were also frigid. having said that, phil, i mean, again, i don't have any aviation expertise. i'm just telling you, the conditions that i saw on the ground were unlike any i have ever seen in toronto. perhaps we'll know that that had nothing to do with this incident. but as you see the pictures of the ai

cnn's paula newton is joining me now. paula, i know that you were at the airport the same day. just, you know, a bit before this all happened. what are you learning about the people on board and some of the injuries that they have sustained? >> yeah. so we just have some new information in from delta. they in fact say that they have deployed their incident response team, but as well, they say that some of the passengers, some of those 18, sarah, that initially were sent to hospital have now been released. and of course that is good news. as you point out, these are non life threatening injuries for all 18. we had heard earlier that three possibly were critically injured, including one child, and we continue to look for updates on the condition of those passengers. but you know, sarah, you and i, anyone looking at this video, you can only say miraculous when you look that it's flipped upside down and that the kind of injuries that we're looking at here in the main were fairly minor. people being released from hospital and even those injuries that were more critical, they're non-

i want to bring in cnn's paula newton. paula, how are these tariffs different than the threats that we saw against mexico, china and canada? what consumers need to know. well, no. >> different in terms of what the impact will be. and i would argue this is not going to be like the shock that we've had over eggs. no, this is going to be more like a trickle down effect on the economy. and also, the president has been here before. he did this in 2018. and in terms of the impact, he is saying, look, this is about national security and he wants to make sure that he has a strong aluminum and steel industry. having said that, they're not the most strategic of things. you could handle this by having quotas and just taking a certain amount of steel and aluminum from places like mexico and canada and other countries. he's not doing that. and what this does is it risks a wider trade war. and that could not be the kind of trickle down effect on prices. no, that could in fact lead to trade wars, which will raise prices along a range of g

cnn's paula newton is live for us from new york. paula, what did investigators reveal about what happened? >> well, the bottom line is not much except to say that the investigation is well underway. and think about that, boris. that plane will remain on that tarmac for the better part of the next 48 hours, as at least 20 investigators from canada, but also officials with the faa as well as the so-called go team from delta, all will be there on site, looking at the fuselage as it remains there in toronto. but as you just pointed out, there is a lot of video right now as well. the data recorder, the data recorder will be key here to really determine what was the altitude, what was the wind speed, the ground speed, all of these kinds of things as well, of course, as the communication with the control tower. i want to point out that deborah flint, who just gave a press conference there in toronto, she is the lead at toronto airport, did indicate what i saw for myself about an hour before this happened at toronto. they had had well over 2

. >> paula newton joins me now with more. paula, you had landed at that airport not long before all of this happened. what are sources telling you as to what they can say about the investigation? in the very preliminary parts of it? >> listen, they're obviously not going to say much now. they don't want to assume anything because that's part of a good, fair and balanced investigation. now, look, canadian transportation safety board, they're there now, as is the ntsb right from the united states. we'll have a preliminary report out in about a month from now. but when you are looking at this, you obviously have to look at the weather, right? it is the wind. it is the accumulating snow. toronto had gotten over a foot of snow really in the last week. sarah i was at the airport. you could see the blowing snow and i remarked that i have never seen that much snow blowing around at toronto pearson airport, and i've gone through there hundreds of times. at issue now, though, is also the fire chief weighing in this evening at pearson an

and let's bring in our paula newton. paula, you just flew in to new york from toronto's pearson airport. can you tell us a little bit about what the conditions were like earlier? >> yeah, i mean. >> i don't have pete's expertise, but i can tell you i have been through this airport hundreds of times. that is more snow than i have ever seen there. and i was there for well over two hours waiting for my flight. the snow was actually blowing and you could see the snow removal crews all over the airport just trying to keep up with the blowing snow. and for perspective, in the last week they just finished a major storm in toronto. but for perspective, they had probably 15 or 16in of snow in the last week. you could really tell at the airport. and that's what struck me as well as the winds. the wind was whipping up the snow incredibly in all directions. when we went to try and take off, we were delayed 30 to 45 minutes. i would say just waiting for runways to open. given the winds and the fact that they want to be safe. i mean, i

i want to bring back in cnn's paula newton, who is typically based in canada. aula, what more are we learning about the people on board here? >> well, delta now confirming that there were 80 people on board, four crew members and 76 passengers. and that would make this a full flight as it touched down there in toronto. and also want to reiterate that the ntsb is on their way to the location in order to begin this investigation. the lead, though, of course, on the investigation will be the transportation safety board of canada. anita anand, the transport minister in canada, confirming that as well. those investigators are on the way to the scene here. as i've been saying, phil, i was at the airport a little over an hour before this plane landed. there were fierce winds, a lot of blowing snow, crews working to really try and clear those runways. but again, we have no idea if that led to this incident or not. i do want to point out, phil, that again in about 20 years ago, in 2005, an air france plane hit the runway here, overshot it. in fact, it landed in a ravine.
