cnn's paula reid is here. paula, always great to see you, we know kerik wants immunity in the case.hy is that so important? >> he's not named, but cnn has identified him as co-conspirator number five. in the indictment, they allege meetings with lawmakers in pennsylvania and arizona, two states, of course, trump was contesting. he also attended at least one key meeting at the white house, along with trump attorneys so he could potentially be a really key witness for prosecutors as they try to determine what exactly trump allies were doing in and around the election. his attorney tim pellettiere tells us that there's no way testifying without immunity. his client said his client did nothing wrong but if he's on the stand without that assurance he's going to repeatedly invoke his fifth amendment right to every single day. in a letter to the district attorney's office, he suggests that the district attorney has no interest in indicting kerik, if they wanted to indict him, they would have done so. but they refused to put that in writing. going forward, this shows the challenge that pros

our chief legal affairs correspondent paula reid is gathering details for us. paula, what can you tell us? >> wolf, cnn previously reported that mark meadows had testified before a federal grand jury investigating former president trump. now we're learning more about what he has reportedly told investigators. now, according to reports, he's spoken with investigators three times over the past year and he's told them that in the weeks following the 2020 election, he says that he told trump that his allegations of significant voter fraud were baseless. now, that is such a significant break from the rhetoric of former president trump. it's also a significant break from what meadows has said publicly, including in a book that he wrote, because he said he wanted to, quote, set the record straight. he reportedly told investigators that trump was being, quote, dishonest, and that "obviously we didn't win." meadows is seen as a critical witness. he was the white house chief of staff, and he can offer keen insights into trump's actions and state of mind following the elec

paula reid was inside of the courtroom, and what did you see and hear in there and where do things go from here? >> well, kate. hunter biden entered court just before 10:00 with the lead attorney, abbe lowell and the rest of the legal team, and the secret service detail, and he sat at the defense table listening intently as the judge laid out the charges, and the potential penalties and the condition of the release, which includes no drugs, no alcohol, and he cannot be in position of a firearm. then he entered the plea of not guilty through his attorney abbe lowell. even though he was the first time that a child of a sitting president has been arraigned on criminal charges. this is how we got here. hunter biden has been under criminal investigation for over five years a. trump-appointed u.s. attorney investigated him for that length of time, and appeared that the investigation would be resolved with a plea deal on tax charges and the gun counts were going to be diverted and that plea deal fell apart, and now a special counsel filed three counts related to hunter biden's gun, and sugge

paula reid has details. >> reporter: trump made a brief appearance on the witness stand wednesday, not to testify about the substance of the $250 million fraud trial, but instead to answer questions from the judge about whether he had violated a gag order that the judge has put in place. the judge overseeing the case previously barred trump from making comments about court staff members after trump had posted suggesting that the judge's clerk was partisan. and on wednesday trump complained about the judge saying that he was partisan but also suggested that there was a, quote, very partisan person sitting alongside him. inferring that he was likely talking about a clerk. but trump's lawyers deny that that is who he was referring to and when trump took the stand under questioning from the judge, he said, yeah, i was talking about the judge but then i was also talking about the star witness wednesday michael cohen. but the judge didn't buy it, saying he found trump nod not cre credible and slapped him with a $10,000 fine. going forward this will be a challenge for judges, how to enforce g

. >> let's bring in cnn chief legal affaired correspondent paula reid. just how significant is this guilty plea? >> well this is the second individuals that prosecutors have secured a guilty plea and promise of cooperation from. in the past 48 hours they have secured the deals from two people who worked quite closely with former president trump's legal team and their efforts to overturn the results of the election. in open cord, chesebro admitted to expiring with trump and rudy giuliani and john eastman to subvert the electoral college process. as part of the plea deal, he'd agreed to plead to one felony count. he has also agreed to testify in future hearings. he faces up to five years of probation and $5,000 in fines an resitution. he will also have to write an apology letter. but it is notable that as a first time offender, in the state of georgia, it is expected that if he complies with the terms of his probation, this will be wiped from his record. if he fills out an application on monday, he does not have to say that he's been convicted of a felony.

our chief legal affairs correspondent paula reid is on the story for us tonight. alk us through the judge's order and how it impacts the former president. >> reporter: well, wolf, these are the first significant restrictions on trump's speech, and these come ahead of his expected federal trial here in washington, d.c. related to his alleged role in january 6th and efforts to undermine the 2020 election. the criminal defendant, he already had certain restrictions on what he could and could not say. for example, you can't threaten or harass witnesses, but in recent weeks the government asked for a longer list of restrictions, an expansive gag order after trump made attacks against prosecutors, against witnesses and the court itself. now i was in court today for over two hours as judge tanya chutkan heard arguments from trump's prosecutors and trump's own attorneys about the possibility of a gag order here. trump's attorneys emphasized the fact that he is running to be president, and that any restriction on his, quote, political speech would be censorship. but judge c

let's break this down with central bank's senior justice correspondent paula reid.s take a step back. how did we get here? >> it's a great question. you have to understand the entire story here to understand what exactly is happening today. several months ago this case as well as some tax charges were all expected to be resolved with a plea deal. hunter had been under investigation for five years and it was expected that he would plead guilty to some tax charges and these gun-related charges would be diverted, which means that they would ultimately be dismissed, not even charged, if he could stay away interest drugs and stay out of legal trouble for a few years. that entire plea deal, though, several weeks ago fell apart. the prosecutor overseeing the case was named as special counsel and then he went ahead and filed formal charges related to this gun issue. now, i was in court with hunter a few days ago, he pleaded not guilty during his arraignment but now his lawyers are arguing this whole case should be dismissed. they said that original diversion agreement remai

cnn's paula reid explains why her guilty plea could have a huge impact. >> how do you plead to the sixs of conspiracy to commit intentional interference with regards to election duties? >> guilty. >> former trump attorney sydney powell appeared in a georgia courtroom this morning, the second person to plead guilty and the sprawling case over efforts to overturn the 2020 election in that state. >> do you understand by pleading guilty, you are giving up the right to trial by jury. >> yes. >> as part of the deal, powell will amid her role in the january 2021 breach of voting systems in murrell coffee county, georgia, we required to write an apology letter to the citizens of the state and pay nearly $9,000 in restitution and fines as well as turn over documents. powell admits to taking steps after the 2020 election for the purpose of fully tempering with electronic ballot markets and tabulating machines, which were overt acts to affect the objects of the conspiracy and with the intention of taking and appropriating information data and software, the property of dominion voting systems. but

i want to get straight to cnn's paula reid live in washington with this first on cnn reporting. paula, what are you learning here? >> phil, we've tlaernd from kerik's attorney that his client has been subpoenaed, ostensibly to testify for a trial that is expected to begin at the end of the month. but he is demanding that the district attorney's office grant his client immunity before he would let him testify. now, as you just noted, kerik is one of the unindicted co-conspirators in this case. he is not named in the indictment, but cnn through our reporting, we have identified him as co-conspirator number 5. and this shows, this subpoena shows that prosecutors are clearly trying to secure the cooperation, the testimony of someone that could help reveal some important details about exactly what trump allies, like rudy giuliani, were up to in and around the election, but this also shows the challenges that they were going to face, if someone is an unindicted co-conspirator, very few defense attorneys will let their clients take the stand and do anything other than plead the fifth, i

paula reid has more on trump's heated day in court. i want to begin with manu raju on capitol hill because, manu, the courtroom mess aside, a victory for trump on capitol hill today. house republicans electing mike johnson as their new speaker, and the 22 days in the house. how did he pull this off? >> well, republicans were weary of all the infighting, members who are more moderate, including ones who are more conservative, simply wanted to move on because they had been battling an intense discussions behind the scenes for days and have not been able to come to any sort of consensus. and as a result this chamber has been completely paralyzed, unable to act on key issues of national, international significance, whether it's aid to israel or taking steps to reopen the government. and ultimately after three nominees of their party who could be the speaker of the house after kevin mccarthy was ousted in historic fashion unprecedented fashion. after those three nominees saw their bits collapse ultimately they decided mike johnson was the o

i want to go now to paula reid. you have been doing a lot of reporting on this as well. t into context just how big a deal it is that for the second day in a row, we are seeing people in donald trump's orbit on this issue agreeing to a plea deal. >> not just in his orbit, but also members of his inner circle. the district attorney in fulton county has now secured plea deals from two former members of trump's legal team. i spoke to a source this morning close to the current criminal defense team, who conceded that, yes, this could be a problem if the two testify at a trial, defending on what they say. and they also note d that the biggest problem for trump here is that his defense attorneys are not going to get what they hoped would be a preview of the fulton county case. they were hoping to have the opportunity to watch the trial against powell and chesebro to be able to see the weaknesses were in the case and plot their own defense. now they will not have that. going forward, we'll expect additional plea deals. it was never expected that all 19 defendants in this sprawl

there's a whole lot more going on with this, cnn's paula reid is there. ula, what we're looking at here is the first ever indictment of a sitting president's child. what is going to happen today? >> reporter: kate, any moment, hunter biden is expected to arrive in federal court in wilmington, delaware. he'll head inside for his arraignment on the federal charges. he's expected to plead not guilty. likely to be processed and the judge will set out the terms, conditions for his release. this should be a pretty quick hearing, even though it's quick, it's procedural, and still a historic moment. this is the first time that a child of a sitting president will be arraigned on criminal charges. now, these gun charges, along with several other charges related to alleged tax crimes were all expected to be resolved were a plea deal several weeks ago but that plea deal fell apart. the prosecutor overseeing the investigation in the case has since been named as special counsel and filed these gun charges, but, kate, at this point, it's unclear what's going to happen wi

>> reporter: sources tell me and paula reid that hunter biden incurred this $10 million legal debt overe of five years as he moved to defend himself against federal investigations into tax and gun crimes, a lengthy child support case and various congressional inquiries. this is the first time that the true scope of hunter's financial straits is being reported. we've learned from our sources that that mountain of legal debt is only set to increase by a magnitude of millions of dollars if some of these cases go to federal trials, if hunter is not able to reach a settlement in some of these cases. financiers like longtime friend and hollywood attorney kevin morris are no longer able to bank roll hunter's legal efforts. now his team is trying to get creative. there's an expectation that could go to deep-pocketed biden allies to shore up his financial position to try to fill that hole and raise some of that money. for the last several months his team has been considering the idea of launching a formal legal defense fund. it would have been run by an ethics attorney. it would have been by the

joining me now from wilmington is senior legal affairs correspondent paula reid. it was a very quick moment today inside the courtroom. tell us what happened inside. >> reporter: this was a quick procedural hearing. hunter biden sat quietly, listening attentively as the judge laid out the charges that have been filed against him, the possible penalties and the conditions for his release, which includes that he abstain from drugs and alcohol and prohibited from owning a firearm. he entered that not guilty plea through his attorney. even though this was a short hearing, this is still historic moment. but shortly after the hearing, a statement was issued accusing the justice department of bending to pressure from former president and his maga allies, to bring this case against the president's son. they appointed to the fact that no one in the district of delaware has ever been charged with something like this based on a similar fact pattern, and legal experts have questioned the strength of the government's case here. this was supposed to originally be resolved with

cnn's paula reid is here and broke this exclusive. what are you hearing from your sources, paula?our colleague kayla tausche and i have been talking to sources over the past few weeks about just how much all of this has cost hunter biden because resources are an important issue when you are facing a possible federal trial. and we've learned that over the course of the past several years he's racked up more than $10 million in legal bills, and that comes from the fact that he's been under federal investigation for nearly five years. he went through a divorce. he had a costly custody battle down in arkansas. he's also taken on a more aggressive litigious approach to his detractors. all that costs money. and his attorney kevin morris has paid for some of it but some other hunter biden allies had hoped that they might be able to do some fund-raising, that perhaps they'd get some help from some top allies of his father. that has not materialized. there was also talk, we learned earlier this year, of a possible legal defense fund. but that never quite got off the ground. >> so how is th

. >> speaking of donald trump, i want to go straight to paula reid who has some new reporting on former president donald trump who just suffered a big blow in court. paula, what happened? >> reporter: well, dana, just moments ago a federal judge ruled that former president trump will be subject to additional restrictions ahead of his federal trial here in washington, d.c. related to his alleged role in efforts to subvert the 2020 election and january 6. now, like many defendants he already has some restrictions on what he can and cannot say as a criminal defendant. he is already barred from harassing or threatening witnesses and he has limitations on the extent to which he can discuss the case with anyone who is not one of his attorneys, but in recent weeks special counsel prosecutors argued there should be more restrictions on him in light of public statements he has made about witnesses, about staff members and here the judge had a really difficult task, dana. i was in court as she listened to arguments from defense attorneys and prosecutors about this need to balance his first amendm

let's get right to paula reid. tell us about these discussions. >> reporter: as you know, 19 defendants were charged in this sprawling rico case and it was always expected that the district attorney would likely offer some of them plea deals to try on to whittle down the pool here. our colleague sara murray and zach cohen have learned that now several defendants have been approached by possible plea deals including former trump campaign staffer micro man. b -- mike roman. but only mike hall has actually accepted the offer. prosecutors also signaled last week that ahead of that trial they will likely offer plea deals to kenneth chesebro and sydney powell. they are expected to go to trial at the end of the month. but it is unclear if they will accept the offer. but one person who is not getting a plea offer right now is rudy giuliani. his lawyer tells me that they have into the been approached about any such deal and this morning the second of his two georgia based lawyers withdrew from the case. giuliani needed loca
