paula reid. paula, this is obviously something that had been debated for a bid after trump's conviction when the sentencing would come. now we know it won't be until after november's election. >> this is a big win for the trump legal team. they have been really focused on this for the past few months, trying pretty much every legal avenue to try to get this delayed almost daily appeals and filings in an effort to either get this state or delayed. and this is the second time that judge juan marshawn, the judge who oversaw that seven-week trial in new york earlier this year, the second time he's delayed the sentencing. the sentencing was originally scheduled for july 11. it was then pushed back to september 18, so that the court could consider the supreme room court's historic ruling on presidential immunity and how that factored into this case now, it has been delayed again, and this is this could have gone either way, but it is somewhat surprising because over the course of this entire case, judge

now outside the federal courthouse here in washington with cnn chief legal affairs correspondent paula reid. paula, obviously a big day in court. the supreme court kind hitting the reset button on this federal election subversion case with their unity ruling what got sorted out today? >> well, not many things. were resolved in court today, but this was the first hearing since that historic supreme court decision limiting what prosecutors can charge former president trump with, and what evidence and they can use an boris. i was little surprised by just how contentious this hearing was at times, especially the exchanges between judge tanya chutkan and lawyers for former president trump the judge outright rejecting a suggestion by trump lawyers that she should just toss the indictment entirely against their client. she made it clear that as not going to happen she also made it clear that she is not taking into consideration the date of the election as she moves forward with this case. now she's been pretty consistent about that, that she does not take politics into consideration as she decides

let's get straight to cnn's sara murray and paula reid. paula explain this latest ruling by judge chutkan and what it means for the average american well, for the average american, it means that they might see some new evidence in this case before election day, because here, judge chutkin is allowing prosecutors to submit hundreds of pages of evidence and arguments that they have gathered against former president trump related to efforts to subvert the 2020 election. and the reason she's allowing this is because she believes the supreme court it has issued her a task and that is to look through the allegations here. and the evidence and determine which portions of this case maybe immune from prosecution under their ruling granting former president trump, but other presidents partial immunity for official acts. so this could potentially be filed on thursday. it will be filed under seal so it's possible that she could release this at some point before the election. but of course, jake, if trump is re-elected, both of smith's cases will be dis

paula reid is live outside the federal courthouse in west palm beach, florida. paula, what else happened during this hearing today of. >> course, as you know, there are no cameras in federal courts. so our colleagues were inside described to us how ryan wesley ruth was wearing sort of these dark prison scrubs. he was shackled, both his hands and his feet for this initial appearance before a magistrate judge. now he was asked a series of questions our colleagues say that he nodded and said yes, judge. a few times. but this hearing was also boar's the first time that he learned the charges that he is facing including these two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and receipt of a firearm with it literally did serial number. and of course, this investigation is barely 24 hours old, so it is highly possible that additional charges will be filed against him, though it's unclear exactly what those charges will be. now as of now, the government is arguing that they want him to continue to be detained ahead of a possible trial. they argue that not only
