and bay area native paulina edmonds had a breakout performance. she surprised the judges and crowd with a second place finish in the short program on thursday, and then tonight. >> she has one of the most technically challenging programs of the evening. >> she started strong with a triple-triple combination. her only major flaw of the evening, a fall on a triple lutz. she's just 15 years old, the youngest competitor tonight. she's a sophomore in san jose. and i talked to gold medalist christy yamaguchi tonight by phone. she was quietly rooting for her fellow bay area scokater. >> you have to root for the hometown girl. to just go lights out and skate like she said is incredible. >> she trains at the sharks facility in san jose. >> i knew from the moment i saw her skate that she would have such a great chance at making it, because of how hard she works and on her mom's car, she has the olympic rings on it. that's always been in her mind. >> so despite her number two finish, and there are three spots for the u.s. women's team, it's possible she stil

now paulina edmonds. >> tomorrow morning she has a full load of classes in high school. but in three weeks, she'll be in the spotlight. here's kris sanchez. >> reporter: when paulina edmonds saw her score from this short program in boston this weekend, she says she thought she could make the olympic team. but still, it has. sunk in. >> i just haven't really set into the fact that i'm going to the olympics yet. so i just still feel like all normal, like i just came home and i think in a few days it will start to sink in and i'll be really excited. >> reporter: neighbors put signs up to welcome her at home, and her school congratulated her with this banner. but she's been working to make the olympics for years. we first met her four years ago as she trained at san jose for the vancouver olympics. her mother, nina, is one of her three coaches. but it wasn't just her motherly pride telling her daughter had a gift. she's also a professional coach trained in russia. now her daughter will compete in her homeland. >> of course it's a dream come true and very exciting for us. >>

. >> reporter: hi, there, you mentioned that paulina edmonds is just 15 years of age. and that might seem young to most of us. but consider the fact that she first put on skates when she was 20 months old, when a lot of kids aren't yet walking. so clearly the last 13 years or so of preparation have paid off. her short program at the u.s. national championship paid off. it was described as charming and nearly flawless. and paulina's coach said it showed the world that she has a gift of skating with the speed and power and grace while making all of it look delicate and poetic. now because of that and her commitment, her coaching team says they always believed she could make the olympic team at 15. this is paulina skating for us during the vancouver olympics when people were already pegging her as a natural for international competition. she will try to balance being a normal kid and a great student with perfecting a routine she hopes will earn her gold. >> i haven't really set into the fact that i am fwae together olympics yes. so i still feel all normal, like i just cam
