>> what's wrong with that, paul, the students there now are going to suffer in the interim.f you look at this, you basically have-- this is a civil rights issue, under 60% of chicago students are graduating from high school and in the really bad neighborhoods, it's even worse than that. so, those students are being failed right now and that's not something that can necessarily wait. they had a chance here, i think, to fight a little bit harder, but they didn't for, i think, partially political reasons. >> and the political reason was because there's an election coming and a showdown would not be very good politics? >> election coming and this is obama's hometown and the democrats facing off with the unions and isn't a story that anyone really wants to talk about here, so, i think that was a large part of it. >> david, you met with rahm emanuel a week before the strike was settled and you wrote that he had a pretty calm, cool attitude toward this, a guy who is not necessarily known for political cool. he can get pretty combative. you, what's your take on the outcome? >> well,

>> we heard a lot about paul ryan because he told us a lot about paul ryan. chris kristi told us a lot about himself. -- chris christie. ryan just seems disingenuous. you get that impression he is playing a role, and he has been playing this role since the time he was a kid. >> if charles was here, he would give you a real one. i did bump into him and mark in florida, as you know. my question was -- how enthusiastic are these delegates about the head of the ticket? >> i think what is really interesting is how at the convention, they have managed to bring together a party with evangelical and the kind of moderates that romney would have represented. i think they have done a good job except for a few of the ron paul-ites. it is a convention that is united by its opposition and open hostility to barack obama. they were going to support whoever was the nominee. mitt romney may have -- may not have been their first choice, but they are falling behind him. i thought chris christie lighted up the place. >> real leaders do not follow polls. real leaders change polls.

the answer is more paul ryan. would like to see more of paul ryan not just on the stump at these rallies but doing a lot more media. i also think it would probably work in mitt romney's favor to have paul ryan play a more traditional vp role, which is it should be paul ryan out there on the sunday shows and in the press. >> instead of buchanan, for example? >> i don't mind surrogates. i don't think mitt romney needs to be the one calling out president obama is egypt an ally or not or is israel an ally or not? this should be paul ryan's job. paul ryan should be the one sort of calling out obama, and mitt romney should be running for president. i don't think it's that ryan isn't capable. he is. he's very good at this. so there's a lot of sort of second-guessing as to what the strategy within the campaign is. i talked to a bunch of strategists off the record who had their own takes what's going on here. frankly, as a voter, i don't care. i want to see more of paul ryan. >> there's a reason. the reason actually strate

look, mitt romney did not pick paul ryan because of paul ryan's medicare or budget programs.e picked paul ryan because of his youthfulness, because of the cultural appeal, because of what paul ryan himself calls the deer hunter catholic that he is, okay? that might sell in pennsylvania, but the other stuff won't. and if we're going to be cutting medicare at some point, which i think most voters understand, i think right now looking at these alternatives, they would rather have a democrat they know than a republican from a party that never supported the program to begin with. >> let me go to joy on that. joy-ann, it seems to me that people who once you get into your late 60s, early 70s, into your 80s, you have one primary care, and that's what you're always talking about with your friends, how is your health? how is it going? you're social life in many ways is going to see the doctor. you have to survive, see your kids and grandkids. you don't walk away and say i'd like to cut it but i don't like his health care program. it's pretty hard to separate. >> the most remarkable thi

he was rand paul's campaign manager during his 2010 senate run and then he was ron paul's campaign managerring his 2012 presidential run. so this is a guy who has been as anti-establishment, and as pro-paul as any republican in the country. in fact, for rand paul, the son, to get to the senate, he first had to win a primary against mitch mcconnell's hand-picked candidate in kentucky. it was the true believer conservative outsiders against that entrenched washington establishment. now one of the truest of the true believers is moving into a key position on mcconnell's campaign. but in some ways the move shouldn't be too much of a surprise. to a degree people i think really don't appreciate, ron paul's dramatically changed the face of the republican party. not on everything, of course. his attitudes on foreign policy and on the drug war haven't gotten him very far. but his positions on the size of government and in particular on monetary policy on the fed have basically won. i mean, the last book ron paul wrote, the thing he really wanted people to know about him before he ran for president
