steve paulson i'll take it. thank you. scientists are getting a never before seen glimpse inside the eyes of hurricanes. thanks to new drone technology being built right here in the bay area. the company, saildrone, is based in alameda and it makes robotic sailboats to collect high quality information from the ocean. sail drones were created to chase after hurricanes trying to understand what's happening as the hurricanes approaching. as the hurricanes happening and as it passes through off of the water level is something that they've noaa has never been able to achieve before, more aquatic drones have instruments that can measure variables in the air and on the sea. the data gives scientists a better understanding of how hurricanes develop. we're finding some interesting things with the saildrone data, how the waves interact with the winds and can cause changes in that drag effect that slows down the hurricane's winds. scientists watched the data collect by the sail drones at the mission control office in alameda. this is

steve paulson. eye on? well, we'll talk about the wind on maui. it has more to do with high pressure, but that the hurricane well, well, well, well. south of the islands, that's hurricane dora there. but the high pressure to the north is generally the difference in the pressure gradients. i mean, dora is going far south, but they're getting strong northeast wind because of the high, doesn't like the low. it fills it with wind high doesn't like low pressure. so again, it's not because the hurricane is going over, it's well south, but the difference in the pressure gradients is creating some pretty strong gusts there throughout the islands, not just on maui. we do have some interesting temps yesterday because of a southeast wind. i mean, some areas dropped 20 degrees. others only dropped to about 5 or 7 because of a strong southeast wind. san jose and much of the peninsula were in on that southeast wind. so 85 livermore, 84 concord dropped 18 degrees to 80. san rafael 79. oakland almost 70. san franci

joining us for more insight into those efforts is former fema administrator david paulson. you for being here to discuss what is a growing tragedy. i want to get your thoughts on how big of a task this might be for fema. and what could be biggest challenges be? >> good question. it is tremendous devastation. we have all seen at. it is unimaginable. a lot of us have been there. the travel time is difficult. but i am impressed with what fema has done. she has been on the ground, gotten ashe clearly understandse devastation. she has taken a hands-on approach. there are over 300 workers. there are search and rescue people, probably 50 to 60 people dealing with those who have lost their homes. they understand what has happened. housing is going to be an issue. fema does have a program in place where they will put people in hotels and motels. they will make sure that they have a place to stay and are taken care of and are warm. they are moving tens of thousands of cots. probably 75,000 or 100,000 allocations of water. it is tough, but i am pleased to see that fema has moved quick
