in my church, the paynes, james payne and geraldine payne used to live on top of the house where they stayed, and they lived there and then put costumes on or colonial garb and went downstairs and interpreted the kitchen. so that was something that i don't know how that came about. i don't know what the purpose of that was. i don't know what they interpreted, but they said they interpreted african-american history down there, you know, in the kitchen. i know that there were people in the kitchen, african-americans in the kitchen, but to be real honest, we're talking about employees who happen to be black, in costume, in those areas. if you were to walk in and ask them about african-american history, you may not get an answer because that's not what they were there for, and they would tell you, i'm cooking. or i'm the blacksmith, or i'm the silversmith. they were more craftspeople than interpreted african-american history. so i think there was a need for it, and african-americans were represented throughout the foundation all the way up to '79. but the focus wasn't on african-american
