paypal split from ebay. what we thought was going to happen was that paypal was supposed to be this growth business that was supposed to take off. we have ebay numbers exceeding expectations. paypal comes out of the gate and it kind of flopped. people are looking at take rate, the amount they take home per transaction, and they are seeing it drop. you are seeing a lot of purchasing power from big companies that negotiate deals with paypal. cory: it is fairly interesting here. paul, when a company does an ipo, they make sure they have a positive surprise in the first quarter earnings report. what is there to be concerned with in the paypal model? paul: the issue here, it is not a volume business. we saw the total payment volume increased double digits once again. that is kind of supported by the sense that -- electronic payments are going to be a very strong secular growth story across the industry. we saw that in the paypal numbers. tom mentioned the take rate. that is something a lot of companies have to pa

the paypal network is what i would call it.probably started six to 12 months after the ebay acquisition. emily: linkedin, tesla, youtube, yelp, yammer, and spacex. all founded by members of the paypal mafia. what was special about all of you? what did you have in common? reid: paypal collected a whole bunch of people that were young, intense, and entrepreneurial themselves. then all the sudden, it was bought by ebay. so all of these folks were like, what do i do next? chad and steve do youtube. you one goes to do tesla and spacex, some of them do yelp, i do linkedin. and yet, because we had this intense experience together, we all still have really tight networks. we are calling each other going, i'm thinking about doing this, what do you think? emily: who do you call for what? reid: for example, for macroeconomic bold models, i will call peter. the intersection of interesting business models or business technology, i will call max. for a willingness to just think super big, with risk as not a variable, elon. i think paypal is there. they are competing against more standalone mobile players such as square, strike. but i think a power has done a good job migrating to the desktop to the mobile. that is what investors will be looking for going forward. cory: i think paul sweeney does a good job, almost as good as tom. the camera on a stick, the company having a hard time -- earning $.13 a share in the quarter, which is not what the industry was expecting. gopro also missing analyst estimates, though the analysts were wrong, they did not do the $400 million in revenue. they would take some of the cash from the ipo and spend it by buying back shares, so soon after going to the market to say we need money to grow our business. now they will get you to take some stock away. wasceo said the quarter clearly more difficult than expected. biduing with earnings, reporting third-quarter results. they have been a top provider of search for china. beeneos top priority has online. part of that research is not in beijing, but righ

paypal got a lot of the hype and the spin-off.you look at these numbers, revenues are just in line. eps is a little better. this isn't the sort of quarter where we're really concerned about eps in these companies. it's top line growth. looking for 3.2 billion in q4. that's the high end of the guide. on the plus side, though, in their guidance, they maintain the revenue guide for the year and they up their eps guide. the question strategically for this company is are they going to get the growth engine going? one of the things that the ceo is trying to do is get sellers back onboard with e-bay. he's got this message about diversity. >> but talk about the competition. etsy in the handmade space. this is a crowded place to be, isn't it, john? >> e-bay played fast and loose with that seller relationship when they really owned it. now e-bay is trying to bring those folks back into the fold. the tricky thing is, though, when you look at what happens during the holiday season, it's 1% of those online items that represent the biggest bulk
