and, carl icahn--- has backed off his proposal for ebay to split off its paypal unit. even though, he still thinks it's a good idea. ebay fell 3 percent to $54 dollars. as the stock market tumbles... prices at the gas pump are surging. the average for a gallon of unleaded gasoline rose a nickle during the past week to $3.61. the national association of convenience stores' jeff lenard has the latest gauge of consumers. what we found in the last few months defies what we found previously. people are feeling the same if not a little bit better about the economy, even though gas prices are going higher. lenard says its because americans are becoming accustomed to the spring transition in the gas industry that will eventualy lead to somewhat lower prices by may. general motors is taking a billion dollar hit. it will spend 1.3 billion dollars to cover costs related to it's recall of more than 2.6 million vehicles. the recall revolves around ignition switch issues. gm says it will add an ignition lock to all recalled cars. those parts begin arriving in dealerships today. desp

if you go through some of the results clearly the growth when it comes to sales growth is in the paypal unit disappointed. in fact, sales growth is slowing. i know guidance disappointed a little. how do you plan to speed that up and build on those synergies which you emphasized so much during the fight with carl icahn to increase the sales growth in the marketplace. >> we feel good about the first quarter. we got through it distracting proxy fight, outperformed on the top line, outperformed on the bottom line and reaffirmed our annual guidance yesterday. so as we look forward in the second quarter and rest of the year we're going to continue to drive strong growth, strong growth in the ebay core business. we accelerated growth outside the u.s. we had strong fixed price growth inside the core ebay business. we'll continue to drive new user growth and expand that global franchise. and then paypal continues to accelerate growth. accelerating merchant services growth in the first quarter. we're expanding internationally. and mobile technology is driving both mobile commerce and mobile payments.

my hunch is there wasn't enough top line growth in the units which is why the stock is down? and how much will this be about paypal the stock has not acted well for over a year, and it's because it's caught in a bit of a limbo. paypal is doing great but also seen to be in a very crowded space. nobody knows the future of payment. everybody wants a big piece of it and i also think after carl icahn stopped his activist campaign, which i thought was a poorly chosen up, it left with, okay, what's the next thing to get this going. >> quit point though, think icon and paypal. having paypal inhouse when there's so much desire for this sort of action has to give you more organic growth and if they make a disposition of that asset for profit, don't you have more upside? >> dom has more from the earnings reports. >> interesting, we've been talking about taxes, tax inversions and arbitraging the tax system and ebay said they brought back $9 billion worth of foreign cash. they repatriated that cash to the u.s. market. as a result of bringing back $9 billion, they took a $3 billion charge so, again, ebay is saying that they hav

paypal fall in that category? >> right now they are not a traditional bank, not receiving deposits, passing money from one person to another. mobile technology is big in the unitedthough we have traditional banking systems here and seeing a major transformation in banking take place right before our eyes so don't think that a bank, whether it's large or small, can get into the digital space. >> yeah. >> many banks right now are doing that. >> are we overthinking this. maybe they are going after the paypals of the world, not the citigroups or jpmorgans? >> i don't think anyone will get their mortgages from facebook any time soon. i don't think that's a business model that facebook wants to emulate. what's interesting is that facebook has tried something like this. had a payment system called facebook credits that got shut down because no one was using it, and part of the reason no one was using it is you couldn't do the sort of peer-to-peer transaction, only for buying things on facebook apps, and it wasn't all that popular. this time around they have to get a lot smarter about the fees they are changing and the way people can get money in and out of system and t
