cnn's nick payton walsh is live in beirut.ve been meeting with these refugees inside some of these camps. what do they tell you? what is life like for them? >> reporter: incredibly hard. o one has doubled in s ed iin siz last two months. they were given a plot of land to prepare with tents and before they had a chance to finish with work, people were being given to them to live in that area. children living in plastic tents wind swept, small fires causing burns, children rushed to the hospitals there, really struggling to keep pace with a population really rocketing out of control. and, of course, sometimes the jordanian air force patrolling the border nearby swoop low over the tent camps, terrifying children who can still remember those jets, the sound of those jets brought to them inside syria, bombing by the regime, brooke. >> if the u.n. predictions are accurate about the possible tripling of refugee numbers, how much worse could it get for the people in these camps? >> reporter: not just the camps, the countries trying to

our nic payton walsh following the story for us from beirut. nic, just in the last little while we've heard the green berets were perhaps involved in the attack. tell us about that. >> reporter: we are getting more details around this attack. green berets involved, not clear if they are amongst the dead or injured. this is at a joint base which they were using along it seems with other u.s. type of troop and afghan soldiers and perhaps police as well. we understand from afghan officials that this one shooter, not clear if he actually was afghan security forces or not, he left on the back on the back of a truck and used a heavy machine gun to make this particular attack as you say left ten americans injured and two dead. this at a joint patrol base in the area known as wardak which is sort of southwest of the capital kabul, a vital area. most important of the timing here. this is on a day in which president karzai asked to be removed after a militia loyal to them was involved in a murder of a young man there. vital time. >> nick, i want to ask y

cnn's nick payton walsh has more on this latest attack.: carol, nato confirming two dead americans, but the exact number unknown. there are, apparently, afghan soldiers among the injured as well, and perhaps nato injuries. this happens in wardak province on the day president karzai ordered u.s. special forces to leave that province. after allegations they've been denied by nato and involved in the murder of an afghan militia on their behalf. also, as you mentioned, just on the heels of chuck hagel's first visit to kabul, u.s. secretary of defense there. seemed keen to build a good relationship with hamid karzai but finding the afghan leader very stridently saying he believed a recent attack was the result of u.s. taliban colluding to justify a longer term u.s. presence. accusations nato dismissed out of hand, but it brings to the floor a tough challenge in the months and years ahead as he tries to get his successor into the presidential palace. perhaps he's banking on being and american as a way of shoring up popular performance after a na

international correspondent nick payton walsh is live from the refugee camp in jordan.t are the conditions there like? ? >> reporter: last night we saw how perilous it is just to get here. people were staggering over barren land to what they see safety inside jordan. women who can't walk fast enough, children a 6-year-old with a shrapnel wound to the head, really terrified people who hope that when they get to jordan here, they'll see some kind of of safety. but the situation is equally perilous. in the last five minutes heard shelling not so par in the distance. and this is a camp expanding so fast, the people here can barely keep up with it. >> such a dangerous trip to what he many think is safety. what kind of help is the u.s. offering? >> they've pledged about a third of the amount needed. but even if that money is spent right now, they can't build the camp fast enough to keep up with the influx of refugees. just here in jordan, as many as 5,000 every night in neighboring lebanon, one in ten people living there now is now a syrian refugee. i was here about a month a
