since daybreak, this strike has been a peaceful one. but two hours ago, that peace was broken. that is when an estimated 100 people dressed entirely in black stormed the whole foods near lake merritt taking up outdoor dining tables and chairs and hurling them into the street and a whole foods spokesman now says into the windows of the store. these violent protestors are known to oakland police as the black bloc but watch as "occupy oakland" protestors swinging chairs and sticks to keep them away from the whole foods then form a human chain around that store to help restore the peace. but black bloc was just getting started. they ran next to the bank of america at kaiser center where seven-foot-tall glass windowpanes were shattered with hammers and rocks. not one pane of glass was spared. they then shattered the atm screens and spray-painted the building. the u.s. bank next door was also spray-painted by the black bloc. and one block away at 20th and webster, black bloc continued with smashing the windows at chase bank. kraig debro is in oakland right now and apparently it was peaceful and seems to be more peaceful right now, kraig, what is going on? >> i am at 1st and broadway and police made it a point so say most of the people were peaceful. 7,000 broke out and you can see there are people, let's go to the videotape which began peaceful, the occupied oakland sign is visible, economic justice is what they are seeking, then a group of protesters a small group broke out, they occupied a building, police told them to leave they did not, 3:12 they came to enforce the law and at that point they reacted violently. they threw molotov cocktails and at that point they used bean bags and tear gas to beat back the protest he is. police were here until 4:30 in the morning then they left 15th and broadway, as for the protesters, i said what was the point of violence if it was going to detract from the message of occupied oakland. >> we know from the arrests that the majority of people would come from the outside of the city of oakland and they are not for it other than disruption. >>> i am upset there is a small

day, peaceful demonstration with occupy oakland. then overnight, a group of demonstrators broke off, if you will. there was heavy graffiti here on the buildings. it is pretty much on several of the buildings around here at 14th and broadway. just a really dramatic turn of events from what city leaders say was a peaceful demonstration with about 7,000 people overnight. the splinter group broke off temporarily, took off a vacant building near franko gala plaza and started fires according to the police. the interim chief said some people were determined to cause trouble. i spoke with an officer by phone from the oakland police department. he said the group actually lit flares and threw them at officers, threw bolts and rocks. he said officers used teargas to try to disperse the crowd after they were told to leave. they did not. mutual aid was called in. i asked how many people were arrested. one officer said he didn't have an official number. he said at least 60 though. i wanted to show you what it looks like back here live. it says th

and it is peaceful. >> okay.nd just if you're joining us this morning, police have not only moved in but they have broken down the camp. what you are see are flattened tents. there are two garbage trucks standing by. we believe the plan will be for them to kind of clean up the camp at frank ogawa plaza and we know the police as well as the mayor jean quan will be holding a press conference around 8:15 this morning. >> you can actually see what is left of the lawn there in some spots there. and anne makovec is at the frank ogawa plaza where protesters obviously have ignored those warnings, and they have made arrests, and what can you see from your vantage point here? >> well, overall, i would say there is a big collective squeal going on here, from the point of police and from some of the protesters, and the community members, who did not want a dramatic violent scene here. we didn't see anything like that. even though there was a lot of tension here early this morning. and things could easily get out of control.
