in some ways the defeat a clark air base was worse than pearl harbor pearl harbor. we didn't really have any advance notice in the philippines we did. so this was one of his first failures, i guess at the beginning of the second world war in the philippines. the second failure came almost immediately after this in his defense of the island of luzon. and you can see here the the red line on the map is designed to show the extent of the japanese conquest in the pacific and what they wanted to establish as a defense perimeter to prevent the united states from coming back. obviously pearl harbor is outside of their perimeter, but the attack on pearl harbor was destroy the american pacific fleet. and people make it so that we could not really come back and attack them anytime soon, and you can see the philippines there. just to the east of what is today vietnam? what was then french, indo china in very close to formosa. and so it became not surprisingly despite the fact that macarthur didn't think the japanese would attack the philippines it became an early target of jap

one of the early heroes of pearl harbor was in fact an african-american.t man named dorie miller who was aboard the west virginia during the attack at pearl harbor. and of course work to save the lives of many of his fellow soldiers. and so yes, african-americans were chomping at the bit at times to go ahead and join military service in order to help the united states in this fight. i think it was pretty universal for african-americans to be inspired to pick up this call to defend the country. not just for people who supported franklin roosevelt and the democratic party, even for black republicans to pertinent 1940s are plenty of black republicans. there plenty of black republicans really up until 1964 election. so whether they are democrat or republican, african-americans jumped at the chance on many occasions to help defend their country in the wake of that attack. >> thank you, i'm glad you brought up the reference to dorie miller. the museum has some about him recently his story is so important and interesting. what's interesting about 1941 prior to im

after pearl harbor the situation changes very quickly. the navy there was also the sinking of these two british warships the repulse and the other the name. i'm anyway, there was two of them and these were the greatest british warships and they were down by three japanese planes within minutes because they didn't have air cover. so this made the allied navy's realize uh, oh we really need the fuse right now. we need something to shoot down airplanes right now, and they poured a ton of money into section team it immediately expands. in early 1942 to moves out of the department of terrestrial magnetism and they start a new laboratory and silver spring maryland called the applied physics laboratory. it's still around today. it's called the johns hopkins applied physics. laboratory. it's in maryland. it's got 6,000 employees. they still do very similar work. i spoke to them a couple weeks ago actually. so this was formed in march by march 10 1942. they i'll show i have pictures later of what that looked like, but it was formed in an old garag
