not only was pearl harbor attacked, there was carnage in the north atlantic. great britain had held on by the skin of its teeth. the japanese were conquering bases, american and british and dutch bases throughout the far west. throughout east asia. and the wehrmacht, the german army had reached the gates of moscow. and if they had succeeded in taking the soviet union out of the war, it would have taken a tremendous counterweight to hitler and the german army out of europe, which would have been very bad news. on top of it, making it even more poignant for roosevelt and churchill, when churchill came the first time, in that august off the coast of newfoundland, he arranged a very bright but solemn anglican service on the deck of "hms prince of wales." roosevelt and churchill were both anglicans. roosevelt belonged to the episcopal church. churchill the church of england. the episcopal church had split off from the church of england after the american revolution, but the liturgy and the hymns are very similar. so they had this very emotional service, uplifting s

it was a couple weeks after pearl harbor. and there was a lot to discuss. we had the same goals, but there were tremendous questions about allocation of supplies and material and men to europe and africa. so they had a lot of work to do, but roosevelt and churchill got along famously. after christmas, churchill took special train to canada, gave a famous speech to the canadian parliament in ottawa. he came back on the overnight train on new year's eve, and the next morning, he gets off at union station, goes to the white house, where roosevelt had arranged for him and mrs. roosevelt and their party to come here, to christ church, for a commemoration of the national day of prayer. churchill's granddaughter wrote a book about churchill's travels, and she said it would be hard to find a more evocative setting for this service because this was the home of george washington. it's a beautiful setting and a sacred space. and so they sat here in the washington family pew and the service was special at many levels. the church was packed. a lot of secret service were

jack, you are with the squadron at the time of the attack on pearl harbor. jack: i joined december 12, 1940. richard: then you deployed from there to the battle of midway. jack: i got there in 1942. richard: he was flying in a catalina pby, a patrol bomber. it had great range and considerable vulnerability. your position on the aircraft was as -- jack: flight engineer. richard: what did that involve? jack: years ago, aircraft had an engineer -- they required a lot of instrumentation, unlike airplanes today. aircraft today, the pilot has all the control. pby, the pilot cannot start a pby without the flight engineer. richard: these were full of fuel systems and stuff like that, you are monitoring things like that? i didn't know the flight engineer started pb wide. -- started pby. his aircraft was not just one of the search aircraft that would fly a critical mission at the battle of midway. it flew the most important mission that morning. because the intelligence we had been provided, the pbys had been set up to conduct surveys of certain sectors. there was an

and shortly after pearl harbor. and february it went down it australia. and sank a bunch of ships in the harbor. again in february of 1942, they annihilated nine cruisers and 18 destroyers of the british american and dutch fleet. at the battle. >> the australians were there too. >> april of 1942, just before midway, they had five carriers that hit the yand ocean. and drove the british navy out of the indian ocean. they want as far as madagascar. they sank the british carrier. they raided and sank dozens of merchant ships and they also destroyed all of tankers that were carrying oil from the mideast headed for america. to fuel our war machine. and our military. that access to mideast oil was vital for america. and the german war staff had report to hitler on february 13, 1942, if germany and japan join hands at the indian ocean, the final victory should not be far off. i guess the point i'm making is that the battle of midway frs not about the japanese or the u.s. and the pacific. it was affected all of world war ii. and affected north africa and russia. c
