peer recovery support services are consumers helping other consumers. we've been through training, and we facilitate groups on various topics, from women's health to trauma survival, substance abuse issues with different topics each week from, for instance, evaluating relationships, red flags for domestic violence, and things of that issue that women struggle with. and we also have a computer lab, and we're here to assist you in developing a resume or online job searches. one of the goals is to promote a positive supportive environment to foster women's growth. and another goal is to increase the knowledge of local resources that are welcoming and responsive. i just like the atmosphere. it's a good spirit in that center because it's women that understand what you're going through. so, groups is where it's based on everybody giving feedback about a topic. so it's like we're just, it's a women's rap. so we're just constantly sharing our experiences and what we hope our goals would be, and it's just empowering because you don't feel alone. i think a lot of

we started a peer safe program. and people across the district came together that was interested in the topic. it was key. channeling into the people that personally is interested within the corporations and within the district to really help build the organization itself. we have representatives from the hotel industry, the shipping industry, the fishermen themselves, the actual restaurants and then the major properties. when you think of the square, pier 39, people visiting when things might happen. the organization -- the pier safe committee meets every month. they have pulled people for a lot of reasons but especially with disaster preparedness and that's been helping us out as part of it. communication was key. we started a fishnet radio program every tuesday when you hear the sirens go off at noon, 20 of our properties across the wharf do a radio check with our organization to make sure that they're checking in and we report on that monthly to find out who is and who isn't checking in. it serves as a great rem

you're right, peer support is the key to almost everything. vets don't necessarily want to open up to civilians. i've dealt with this myself when i've gone to the v.a. in terms of the justice system, you're right. what's happened is you've started to see a lot of vets who have not had access to adequate mental health care, who can't get to the v.a. or the v.a., they go to the v.a. and they say we'll see you in six weeks. and what happens is they get into trouble and they interact with the local justice system. so what we've seen in response to that, understanding that these crimes are due to readjustment issues, due to their combat-related issues, there have been 72 veterans courts that have sprung up across the country. they understand these aren't people who made a conscious choice to live a criminal lifestyle, they're dealing with readjustments and have fallen into trouble. we can treat them and deal with it in a peer network and what we've seen is the recidivism level lower. we need to have every community have the ability to do it and we'
