that's right, good morning to you, peggy. i want to get right to it because it really is an incredible sight. that truck involved in that crash is still here off of market street this morning. consider this, this accident happened nearly five hours ago. the truck still sitting here after it caught fire and burned, hit the side of the building at this funeral home here but, also, i want to show you the building itself. it is burned from the bottom. the street side here all the way up to the roof. i just spoke with the owner of sullivan funeral home she is amazed no one was killed in this and for the most part the damage is cosmetic. also very thankful that this wood building didn't completely go up in flames overnight. the driver and the semi truck told police that he was going down market street near castro in this refrigerated unit. that is what he was hauling when the unit blew up. he lost control and just clipped the side of the building and the fire spread and driver and passenger able to get on their own. two people tran

peggy bunker joins us in the studio with new developments. peggy? >> this is a country just being torn apart at the scene. certain cities and villages wanting to join russia and other steadfastly fighting for an independent ukraine. a conflict many are holding -- another ukrainian helicopter was shut down today. the third attack in less than a week. four ukrainian soldiers and now 30 pro-russian separatists were killed yesterday. now over 2,000 people also stormed a military office and the country continues to divide over the conflict. it is now spreading south into the city of odesa. in a possible attempt to keep proseparatists the city has now been closed to arriving and departing flights. the conflict did bring together, however, the russian foreign minister and ukraine's foreign minister as they sat down at a meeting to address ukraine. the increase in conflict was russia's attempt to disrupt the upcoming ukrainian elections. >> russia is clearly intent on disrupting or preventing those elections and i believe that is the strategy of russia at t

peggy bunker here with this story. this girl apparently escape would the use of facebook. >> that is a wonderful thing. that's how she got out of this situation. this shocking case. now 41 years old accused of kidnapping his then girlfriend's teenage daughter and keeping her captive for ten years and forced her into marriage. garcia arrested on tuesday and being held on $1 million bail. accused of false imprisonment and a lewd act with a minor and kidnap for rape. the victim who has not been identified said she was drugged by him ten years ago after which she was kidnapped and held captive in a garage. the girl reported that she lost all hope after garcia told her that her family stopped looking for her and that she'd be deported to mexico if she left him. here's a timeline of this ten-year ordeal. started in 2004 and then 15 years old when she was kidnapped from santa ana by garcia and drove her to a home in compton where he assaulted her reportedly. he forced the girl to marry him using false documents to hide their

peggy bunker joins us now and, peggy, it sounds like there are two sides to this story. >> details are still emerging, laura. we are hearing from this woman who is 25 years old and telling a harrowing telling about being drugged and kidnapped when she was 15 years old. two sides of this story are definitely emerging. some neighbors say they didn't think that anything was wrong. the victim has named garcia, now 41 years old as her abductor. garcia was arrested on tuesday and being held on $1 million bail. he's accused of false imprisonment and kidnap for rape. the victim said that she endured physical, mental and emotional assault for ten years. being forced to marry garcia and have a child with him. her family completely stopped looking for her and be deported to mexico if she left him. however, some neighbors said they never noticed anything was wrong. >> every weekend they would go out and do what a family would do. >> she could have drove to the police station and say, i don't feel safe. >> other neighbors, though, they say they thought the alleged victim was in distress. she knew s

good morning, peggy. you can take a look at it, the most distinguishing characteristic of this young man is the fact that he has a mohawk. according to morgan hill police they consider him to be very armed and dangerous. last night around 9:00 in the parking lot of this target shopping center this man drove up to a woman, a customer and tried to rob her of her purse. she refused. he ended up taking off in his car and we'll now show an image of that car, again, from another surveillance camera's point of view. a white four-door car a dodge neon or chevy cavalier and it has a black bra on the grill. one of those covers that people sometimes put on the front of their cars. according to police, he then after he failed to rob this woman in the target parking lot went down it cochran across 101 to a subway shop and showed the shotgun there. and ended up robbing that store. took some amount of money and police won't say how much. he has not been caught. again, we'll go back to an image of this man. clearly you c

"today in the bay" peggy bunker is here with the proposed changes. >> pot shots are netting hefty tax dollars for santa clara county. with the presence of pot shops comes a whole host of other issues. local schools have doubled since 2011 and today the city council will discuss a clamping down on those dispensaries. first came on the scene in 1996 after state law allowed eed medicinal use of the drug. told police to focus on significant drug trafficking rather than marijuana. the pot shops flourished. 80 shops operate within san jose city limits and they are the exception. every city in santa clara county has banned them. san jose does not want to ban the shops noting they bring in $5.6 million in business tax revenues. heefrz here's what they're proposi proposing. also pot must be grown on site and there needs to be a 1,000-foot buffer between the shops and dicare schools, parks, library and churches. they also need to be 500 feet from drug rehabs and also homes. council members say the proposed changes would actually protect the right to buy marijuana rather than banning it outright

thank you peggy. >> in other news this morning. the u.s.nder secretary of state is in nigeria this morning as the country works to find hundreds of school girls. the mass kidnapping happened a month ago. the u.s. and britain has teams on the ground. the incident has caught the attention of movie stars and now star athletes here at home. stanford grads and wnba stars are first generation americans and their parents were born in nigeria and have spent a lot of time in the country and are teaming up with unicef to help the girls. rally will be held to show their support for the kidnapped girls. the rally begins at noon on the berkeley campus. participants will wear black and green to show support for the missing girls. >> $3.7 million system was implemented last week. officers say in the field some could not log onto data in their cars. crucial information had to be delivered over the radio. they were searching for details that can affect officer safety. department of emergency says it is working on a fix. >> virgin america is no longer flying

peggy bunker joins us with the details. the cost has to be staggering. >> it is absolutely incredible. $50 million is how much bryan stow's attorney said his past and future medical bills could cost after being beaten to death on opening day three years ago. the jurors have been selected in the civil suit against the l.a. dodgers and the grounds for the civil suit is that the dodgers didn't provide enough security or adequate lighting at the game. stow, a former paramedic and father to two suffered brain damage during that beating and is permanently disabled. the two men pled guilty in criminal court earlier this year. they were asked directly if they were dodger fans and if they could be impartial when it came to mccourt and his former baseball team. eight men and eight women were selected for the jury. they include an attorney, school bus driver, a nurse, a journalist and a mail carrier, among others. interestingly, the civil suit also seeks impugnative and reimbursement funds to return to those who supported the bryan st

peggy?the situation developing by the minute hearing about the airports, that is something that is brand-new. fighting in the ukraine is along the east coast of the country, the part that shares a border with russia making it the most vulnerable. today's deadly violence was the strongest attempt to put out separatists. the ukrainian video and helicopters were landing in a nearby field and tanks were surrounded by fearful villagers. all part of an opposition to retake this part of ukraine from pro-russian separatists. two ukrainian helicopters were shut down killing the pilots. a third pilot had to make an emergency landing after being gravely injured. this is reportedly that pilot being removed from the wreckage, but from a russian television station and they're reporting that the pilot is now being held hostage. checkpoints will maintain control as ukraine. today at the white house this situation in ukraine will come to a head as the president meets with chancellor angela merkel to discuss

peggy bunker joining us now.t is hard to believe but the video really shows it all. >> no denying exactly what happened here. this attack happened at oakland high school about two yeweeks a, reportedly after a student in a wheelchair was lingering in the hallway too long. he had cerebral palsy. he and a partner were rushing late students to class and then this, this altercation and he whales on the student right there three to four times and pushes him there out of his chair and dumps him on the floor. the other security guard actually had to step in and restrain his partner. reportedly when the guards started pushing martinez in his chair towards class, martinez laughed at the officers and in response he handcuffed the student and continued to roll him to class the boy spat at the officer and that's when he threw those punches. the principal sent out a letter to parent and staff explaining the incident and also apologizing. the letter reads in part, i'm shocked and deeply hurt by this behavior and i apologize on

i'm peggy bunker. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. we begin with new details on a south bay vocational school that suddenly closed its doors. dozens of students showed up to bryman college in san jose hoping to go to class, but the doors are locked. nbc's bob redell is at the campus in san jose. bob, many students have said they've invested a lot of money and time in this. >> and at least one showing up today, completely surprised at what happened. i just spoke to the llc, the people that own this building, that had been renting their space to bryman college. the lawyer tells us that their client evicted bryman college because they owe around $80,000 in back rent, that they have been behind in rent for some time. you can see, there's the "no trespassing" sign and the doors are locked her. the lawyer tells us they filed an action with the court in early february, tells us the school did not respond, so an eviction date was set three times, once in march, april, and earlier this month. and each of those times, the property owner, accord

i'm peggy bunker. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. we're going to begin with new details on the case of a bay area mother accused of attacking a student. she claims the boy bullied her daughter. this morning, the mother made her first court appearance. nbc bay area's christie smith live outside the courthouse in santa rosa. now, christie, the mother admits to confronting the boy, but she says she didn't touch him, right? >> reporter: yeah, that's exactly right. and the attorney for the mother told the court that he has evidence that would show that this boy probably made up the story about her going for his throat. he says that the mom did go to the school and told him to stop bullying the daughter, but did not touch him. 30-year-old delia garcia-bratcher arrived in court with her attorney and supporters by her side. it was a very brief court appearance. no charges filed. and her attorney told the court he would share that evidence, but didn't say exactly what it was. the 30-year-old is accused of going to her kid's school, olivet ele

"today in the bay" nanette mirranda is live in pleasant view. >> i have an advance copy of president obama's speech. series of actions aimed at carbon pollution. here are some highlights. mr. obama wants to build up a solar work force, provide innovative financing for solar, invest in energy upgrades to federal buildings and improve appliance efficiency. the white house chose walmart to announce these actions because the giant retailer will commit to double the number of on-site solar projects at u.s. stores, sam's clubs and distribution centers by the year 2020. the president is also expected to highlight other major businesses that have made the similar commitments as walmart has, but mr. obama will be greeted by protesters, labor groups and some walmart employees don't understand why he chose the chain for this visit. they say

peggy bunker joins us with the latest, including what vladimir putin is saying this morning. >> more violent fighting broke out in the town in eastern ukraine and reportedly two ukrainian helicopters were shot down by pro-russian insurgents and the images we're seeing show a war-torn ukraine. this is from a russian television station and it reportedly shows an injured helicopter pilot being removed from the wreckage. we have confirmed that one of the helicopter pilots died and the other was reportedly injured and captured and now the violence centers around pro-russian separatists. it could be a replay of what has already happened falling into a russian territory. ukraine interior minister said they're staging a huge counter offensive and taking control of nine checkpoints despite fear fighting from prorussian forces. >>> meantime today at the white house the situation in ukraine will come to a head as the president meets with angela merkel to specifically discuss this conflict in ukraine. it is thought that the president will apply serious pressure to merkel to impose german sanctio

. >> peggy bunker joins us with the proposed changes. good morning. >> good morning. san jose will give this another go and not the first time they tried trying to put a few boundaries around the medical marijuana collectives. 80 set up shop in san jose. there just needs to be more regulation. two years ago the marijuana industry was able to get rid of many of those regulations while 60% of san jose residents say they want medical marijuana to remain available to those that need it and they also want clear controls to manage the stores. san jose does not want to ban the shops completely noting they bring in $5.6 billion in business tax revenue. they are proposing a dramatic reduction of how many stores can operate within city limits. here's some of the regulations they will discuss today. they want it limit the pot shops to commercial and districts. pot must be grown on site, a big change there. 1,000-foot buffers need to be in place between the stores and day cares, schools, churches. they also need to be 500 feet from drug rehabs and homes. council members say the p
