i'm peggy bunker. terry mcsweeney is off. ran for cover. their planned protest interrupted by counterprotesters. nbc bay area's marianne favro has been following this. this was a whole bunch of chaos. >> it certainly was. we know some of the stabbed were critically injured. sacramento fire department spokesman tells me a total of seven people were taken to the hospital. police called it a highly volatile situation. you could see here two men bleeding from the head. police say the small group was about 25 white supremacists who have gotten permission to rally on the west steps and 150 anarchists who came out to protest against them. police say some in that group were armed with batons and bats. dozens of officers in safety gear and horseback tried to control the mayhem. the stabbings involved victims on both sides. some suffered cuts and scrapes during the riots but were not taken to the hospital. the victims were spread out over several blocks in downtown sacramento. the traditional worker party, a white nationalist group, was holding a mar

peggy fox is at the rally. she has more in this live report. peggy? >> reporter: well, the building is behind me, the national headquarters of the nra, and on the 14th of every month, the coalition to stop gun violence has been holding protests here. since the anniversary of the sandy hook massacre, in which 20 children were murdered. today, we had about 100 people out here protesting. many have been here every month. but many were first-timers. they were moved by the mass shooting in orlando. during the event today, a bell 49 killed at the pulse gay nightclub were read allowed. several members of the local lgbt-q community were here calling for stricter gun control legislation, including a ban on the sale of assault rifles and high volume magazines. the nra is the first organization to say oh, no, don't take this away, we need this. what do you need it for? what do you need a magazine that holds 100 bullets for? >> and for one person, that is not right. >> he could pledge his allegiance to isis from here to hell and gone. if he didn't have a gun that

let's bring in peggy bunker who spoke to some boarding that flight. peggy talks to us now from sfo. good morning, peggy. >> reporter: good evening to you. they are on that plane. the whole check-in story is emptied out, but when we do keep checking it looks like they have not departed. passengers landed here from istanbul from that airport. many said they are horrified about what happened after their plane took off and landed here. you can see earlier, this is some of the people that were arriving and coming out here at the international. many people who were waiting to pick them up were just so grateful to see them land here. we learned from passengers that they learned what happened back in the istanbul airport while they were on the plane. they were watching live tv as many of these international planes were equipped with. that's how they learned what happened at the airport they just left from a few hours before. a very emotional flight, according to smome of them. we talked to one who just got back from a peace flight. >> i feel fortunate i was able to get away. it's unfortunat

nbc's peggy bunker has been tracking the results all day. peggy, what do we know so far? >> certainly a big day. of course, us here in california. but we've got new mexico, montana, both the dakotas north and south, and, of course, new jersey. the new jersey polls closed an hour ago. we're getting our first look at election results right there. let's get a look at the democratic side. hillary clinton as expected. she was expected to do very well there. almost 60%. bernie sanders bringing in 41%. taking a look at the gop side, trump with the overwhelming win obviously made easier since cruz and kasich had stepped back. taking a live look right now at the campaign rally, this is taking place at the brooklyn navy yard. just yesterday hillary clinton got the delegates she needed to be the democratic nominee. she's yet to declare any kind of victory, but it's possible she'll do that tonight. now to california where bernie sanders has been continuing his campaign. no matter how you slice it at this point, tonight's win in new jersey, hillary clinton could rule out any chance of

we get more from the accident scene not far from mount vernon from peggy fox. >> reporter: imagine being in that white shuttle bus when it crashed flipped on its side and skidded off the road. >> it's crazy. >> reporter: the bus was traveling north on the gw parkway where there is no median. just as it came to this sharp turn, it crashed head on into a passenger car. several people including members of the military stopped to help. together they lifted the bus up back on to its wheels. then those administered life-saving aid to the injured. >> [ indiscernible >> jump in there and help. >> especially military. around this area, everybody cares for each other pretty much of the it's like a small city back here so i'm glad. i'm very glad they did that. >> reporter: the bus had just left mount vernon. many of the buses that come here are large and carry school groups. this one however was a smaller shuttle bus and it was carrying tourists from china. the person who died was a chinese citizen. 13 people were taken to local hospitals. two people are still in critical condition. >> nothing wors

peggy, who are these felons? >> they issue all convicted. they have all committed violent offenses like murder, rape, manslaughter, assault and some of them are either on probation or in jail, or someplace else, which should make them ineligible to have their rights restored. >> reporter: four convicted felons, committed violent crime. they each had their rights restored by governor mcauliffe, even though they shouldn't have. >> he was convicted aggravated sexual battery, having molested an 11-year-old girl. he served his time in the penitentiary. and when he was released, he was deported back to peru. so as it turns out, he's not even a u.s. citizen. >> a mental hospital, having been found not competent to stand trial for malicious wounding. michael quintana served time for rape, was out on parole and now back in jail. >> he was off 13 months of his probation, before he was arrested for aggravated malicious wounding. and he is currently attending a trial in certain court. >> reporter: michael harmon wright, a former culpepper police officer

i'm peggy bunker. terry mcsweeney is off tonight. the capital was on lockdown, police scrambled to stem the violence. marianne favro's been following this story and joins us now. what do we know about these two different groups? >> reporter: seven people were stabbed, including two critically, and others were hurt when they were beaten with sticks or flying concrete. the rally on the steps of the state capital quickly turned bloody this afternoon as a group of about 30 white sproomists who had a permit to demonstrate here were met by 400 counter protesters. some threw pieces of concrete. these two men suffered head injuries and the violence escalated. several people were stabbed and taken to nearby hospitals, including two who were critically hurt. this knife was left behind on the south steps of the capital. >> this is just crazy. somebody just got stabbed. it's real. it's a real fight. there's nothing exaggerated about it. >> reporter: the rally was organized by the traditionalists workers party as fighting discrimination against w

northern virginia bureau chief peggy fox joins us from the courthouse. peg what is his excuse? >> well, you know police caught him red handed but andrew small testified today that he does not remember any of the attack. because of all the medication he was on. he's blaming -- >> this police dash shows alisha and andrew small speeding on the beltway. when they pull up in springfield, andrew small is wearing only an adult diaper. today on trial for the 2014 brutal attack which nearly killed a mcclain couple. andrew small took the stand. he listed more than a dozen medications he was on. fentanyl and aloted for pain. zanax, a stool softener. he says the meds made him constantly sweat. he said he felt so badly he spent most of that summer in bed. but the prosecutor asked shmal to explain a picture of he and work. shmall said he was only there for a short amount of time. on the stand he says he did not remember he couldn't remember anything from the night of november 9. in rapid fire questions, prosecutor casey lingham adds, you don't remember cutting his throat. don't remember aimi
