peggy: i love it.t's in the wall street journal so you have those readers but you have them on saturday morning when everyone is relaxed and having a cup of coffee. i've been around so long people have my email address which i still have in they write to me and give me their opinion. peter: can you be anonymous on the streets of new york? peggy: yes, often. although it is the best of both worlds. movie fame is the mega fame you cannot escape. television fame is a mega fame. if you are a writer and a newspaper or magazine and you show up sometimes on talk shows, people will often recognize you but it is not like seeing movie stars and no one bothers you. and the people who do come up and say hello are normally just longtime readers and you have fabulous conversations with them. i was walking with my son in central park on a pretty sunday in the spring or summer and somebody came by on talked to me about my work and said, i am so glad you do what you do, we had a lovely conversation and then we moved on

peggy, what a pleasure to have you. and what a great book. >> thank you. oh thank you so much, fareed. >> i first came to know of you watching reagan deliver your speeches, but you then wrote this fantastic memoir of the reagan years in washington. really? that it brought to life what politics was like in the 1980s for a young person so vividly. and you captured the sort of atmosphere and spirit and so i was wondering if you were to write a book like that about today's politics and atmosphere, what strikes you as the things that that you would highlight um, thank you for what you said when i wrote that book in the late 1980s. >> came out in 1990. i wanted to write a book nobody had ever written before, which was what it was like to work in a white house, a subject no one had really discussed before. um what would that book be like now? it would be a wholly different generation moment attitude um 1980 to 1990 were about rising conservatism in america. modern conservatism, the philosophy behind it. we are in now something that is a break from that, a populis

i'm joined right now by former speechwriter for president reagan, peggy noonan.r of a new book, a certain idea of america which is so wonderful. and i was saying to you, i find so comforting in these times to just sort of have a i don't know, you can turn to any page and it's just, it's like a bomb. so thank you. one of the things i wanted to ask you about was some of what you wrote about president biden this was you wrote in september of 2023. you said in insisting on running, he's making a historical mistake. second, terms are disaster sites always. now he isn't up to it it will cloud what his supporters believe is a fine legacy. legacy and allow kamala harris and allowed the kamala harris problem to fester and grow. she's proof that profound and generational party dominance in the state tends to yield mediocrity. they rely on personal charm, but are superficial. going national requires developing more depth or at least imitating depth. she didn't bother to do that. what do you think? this this this. pardon will do now to the legacy. >> what will the party do?
