peggy fox brings us her story. >> this is the guy that did it?is the guy that assaulted me and they never did anything about. >> reporter: when jeanette saw a picture of daniel harmon wright who shot and killed an unarmed woman in a jeep wrangler, she remembers him from four years ago when she says he pushed her so hard she fell and sprained her wrist. >> there he is. the same guy that pushed me. and finally, i said well, this lady needs justice. >> is this where officer harmon wright lives? >> one second. >> reporter: 9news spoke briefly to harmon wright who is on paid administrative leave after the shooting. he was responding to a suspicious person call in a school parking lot when he shot 54-year-old patricia cook six times. harmon wright's attorney says mrs. cook was dragging him with her jeep. an eyewitness says he wasn't being dragged. cook's widower has filed a $5.4 million wrongful death lawsuit against harmon wright. >> why the man should feel to draw a gun on an unarmed middle- aged woman going shopping is beyond me. >> i definitely thi

. >> i'm peggy fox. left one woman dead and another woman in the fairfax county jail. 32-year-old gloria mcmillen is charged with felony hit-and-run in the death of 21-year-old arrington. police say she unintentionally ran over and crushed arrington and fled. >> nothing good is going to come of that either. we'll keep looking. >> witnesses say arrington pulled out in front of the suv in a tan lexus. police believe arrington and mcmillen got out of their vehicles and confronted each other. mcmillen is known for police facing dozens of charges in the past ten years and a conviction of reckless driving. law enforcement sources tell us there is video of the incident showing mcmillen on the ground bleeding. mcmillen had an arraignment this morning, she is being held without bond in the fairfax county detention center. peggy fox, 9news now. >> we have learned that gloria was not alone in that car. police tell us there were two others with her. an adult male and a child. >>> today, the fairfax county police dep

. >> peggy fox explains the falls children businessman won't be seeing freedom for a long, long timeael gardner walked in a free man for the last time in perhaps 22 years. a jury found him guilty of sexually abusing two of his daughter's friends at her slumber party by fondling their genitals. >> it was the with girls testimony and strong dna evidence on the underwear and pajamas that led to the conviction. >> they are my heros. >> reporter: prosecutor's for the commonwealth credit the girls the falls church police department and the girls' families. >> if one of the little girls hadn't come forward both of the little girls hadn't come forward right away i don't know that we would have had much success gathering the evidence that helped to convict mr. gardner. >> reporter: the jury convicted him on two counts of sexual battery and one of battery penetration. parents of two of the girls say they wanted more, but they are satisfied. >> all i wanted was an end to the violence and safety for us for children and others. we have that until the man is about 70 years old. >> the verdict will

peggy fox is looking at how fairfax county is responding to this year's threat. >> reporter: pounding rains this week made a mess of some area roads. now that standing water may create more worries providing the perfect place for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. these mosquitoes were just caught in the first traps put out this season by the fairfax county health department. >> the majority of the problems in the backyard is the asian tiger mosquito. it's a mosquito that breeds in artificial containers around houses. they like those black corrugated pipes that people use to drain the water away from the houses. >> reporter: he recommends tossing a larvae size mosquito dunk in those drain pipes. fairfax county has 70 places where they set traps and each spot they have two traps. this has dry ice that puts out carbon dioxide which attracts mosquitoes looking to bite something and this has stagnant water which attracts mosquitoes looking for a place to lay eggs. picture a bigger concern -- ticks are a bigger concern because of lyme disease. thankfully our most common tick, the lone star tick

our peggy fox joins us live in the courtroom with a difficult case and a tough sentence. >> reporter: that's right. that jury recommending 22 years behind bars. earlier today, finding him guilty of sexually abusing two girls. they were at a slumber party at his house for his daughter's birthday party. the jury believed them. they found the evidence very convincing. the testimony from the little girls and also dna evidence very convincing from the girls who were at the slumber party. a short time ago, we spoke to some of the families involved and here's what one of the fathers had to say. >> there's some soul searching that needs to happen all around. and certainly healing and the verdict will help with the healing and we're going to press forward and the focus should be on these brave young citizens and how justice was served >> reporter: it was heart wrenching watching these three girls get up on the stand during this trial and testify about these very intimate things that happened to them during the night. now the jury found gardner guilty of only what happened at the slumber party.

peggy fox joins us with more. peggy. >> reporter: the jury has been deliberating two hours. if they find michael gardner guilty, he could find the rest of his life in prison. his attorney told the jury his life is already ruined, no matter what happens. mr. gardner, are you feeling confident? michael gardner forces a smile. this is serious business, defense attorney told the jury, three girls accused him of fondling his genitals. for close to two hours, he raised doubts, pointing out his good reputation. he said the commonwealth wants you to bely common sense, to be a deviant pervert, to be someone you have not been in the first 47 years of your life, why would michael gardner do this? greene attacked the dna evidence implying any of his dna doesn't mean anything. he said if you're in someone's house, you are swimming in that person's dna. he criticized the falls church police department's investigation, saying quote, a whole bunch of material was not tested. what is the truth, he asked? can you determine the truth? the police just took what the kid said and didn't consider

peggy fox explains. >> reporter: this is warrenton middle school here in fauquier county. unlike other counties, fauquier has competitive sports programs in their middle schools, but they won't next year. in part it's because the superintendent is not a fan. competitive middle school and freshmen sports in paw square county schools include soccer, softball -- in fauquier county schools include soccer, softball, volleyball, basketball and dance, but the school board has cut funding for all those programs. >> they're very upset. >> i feel that we're promoting more of a complacent versus environment for excellence. >> reporter: they believe parents will be willing to pay for their kids to play at competitive level, but the decision wasn't only because of budget issues. >> they want everyone to have a trophy and i don't believe in that philosophy. i think it's a lesson that needs to be learned starting in middle school that not everybody wins and gets a trophy. you have to work hard and you have to try hard. >> reporter: the superintendent jonathan lewis says he and his staff

our peggy fox joins us live in fauquier county with the very latest. what's up peg?reporter: well, i can tell you this that special grand jury spent an entire month interviewing 45 witnesses related to the shooting. and looked at 100 pieces of evidence. the result? culpeper police officer daniel harmon wright has been suspended without pay and is here in the fauquier county jail. >> his initial reaction was shock and horror. he was on the verge of nausea. >> reporter: he escorted his client to jail after a special grand jury indicted him for murder and three other related counts. the 32-year-old is charged in the shooting death of 54-year- old patricia cook sitting in her jeep wrangler in a parking lot february 9th. >> she had been wandsering around on the school and refused to identify herself. >> reporter: he told investigators she caught his arm in the window and was dragging him when he shot her six times. special prosecutor jim fisher says it didn't happen that way. >> and that statement was partially accurate but the terms trapped and dragged were used. these w

peggy fox, 9news now. >> on now to a 9news update. some residents in culpeper, virginia, want the police and prosecutors to pick up the pace for their investigation into the shooting death of patricia cook. a culpeper police officer shot cook and according to a preliminary report, that officer was responding to a report of a suspicious person sitting in a car in a church school parking lot. and when the officer asked cook for identification, he says she rolled up the window, catching his arm inside and drove off, dragging the officer down the road and that led to the officer opening fire. a man who claims to be an eyewitness says that officer's arm was not caught in the window. police continue to investigate, os does a special prosecutor. james jennings started a facebook page and an online petition to keep the case in the public's mind. >> my focus is to ensure that the details, all the evidence, all the testimony, all the reports, all the eyewitness commentary, all of the ballistics information, is all brought out in an open courtro

in culpeper, peggy fox, 9news now. >> and state police and a special prosecutor are continuing the criminal investigation and they have cook's jeep wrangler. upset he is continuing to have to make monthly payments on the vehicle, even though it will be considered totaled. he hopes the grand jury will come up with an indictment. >>> got into a shootout. when it was all done. the officer was wounded. the suspect was dead. investigators say that officer responded to a report of an armed man walking two dogs last night in the 4200 block of 6th street. suddenly when the officer got there, the man opened fire. the officer fired back. the man was hit several times, he later died. the officer should be okay. >>> and police say they have caught up with two men wanted for raping a woman in virginia. the suspects are valeno and castro. both are believed to be homeless. police say they attacked a 50- year-old woman last sunday in the 2400 block. he was sexually assaulted, hit with a blunt object and robbed. >> outrage stay at home moms took to the streets to fight a law they say sets women's rights bac
