they're here along with peggy noon noonan, david plouffe, welcome to you all. peggy, we heard those numbers from the white house right now. the question is, will people really going to believe it and then are they going to get engaged with that website now? >> that's a great question. the tonny thing in life, even programs can get reputations, you can get a sense that something isn't working. i think the obama care problem is two-tier. one is the real problem with the website that has been fascinating and captivating people for two months. beyond that, there is the deeper problem of america discovering what is in the program itself, people losing coverage, the doctor situation, you can't keep them, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. plus, there's something new, orphaned policies, in which people go on to the website, think they have registered and find out in january they haven't quite so. it's so problematic that i have said since october, this thing should just be delayed one year. >> and david, picking up one of the points that peggy said, there's so much focus

[ applause ] >> peggy noonan worked on that speech with president reagan. she joins me now live. do you still get chills when you listen to that? >> yeah, actually. >> the way he brought the very men before him to tears. he later said that they looked like elderly businessmen sitting there that day but these were the kids who climbed the cliffs. >> mm-hmm. >> this is one of the first times a president in modern history paid this sort of tribute to what we now know is the greatest generation. >> president president reagan was very eager to celebrate the old fellows who had been young boys 40 years before, who had taken the cliffs, who were hepburns of the u.s. army rangers. president reagan wanted very much to sort of get his hands around and lift up a generation that until that point had not been completely, celebrated as this wonderful generation that fought and won world war ii. 16 million of them served in the u.s. armed forces during world war ii and who also got through the depression before that. that was some of the vibration behind the speech. >> be

i don't know what planet peggy noonan is filing this column from.epublicans to turn it into a negotiation in remaking the american health care situation this is a discussion that should have been had on 2009. the president wanted republican votes on the bill. if republicans say we're not going to repeal this we have to replace it with something what will they replace it with? a lot of people won't be able to afford a plan we have to give out subsidies, you built obamacare. >> most conservative republicans don't want another big government program so they don't want anything. they just want to get rid of it all together and that ship has sailed. >> right. i think josh is absolutely right. the most insane political advice you could give to a party is, remember that long drawn out year long excruciating fight over remaking the health care system let's do it again. but you drive it this time. fundamentally the core of the party doesn't believe if you can't afford health care you should get it by virtue of subsidy from the government. they don't believe

martha: peggy noonan was looking at him and said, are you kidding?ole issue if you like your health care plan if you can keep it. she said, kirsten, that will not go away. what do you think? >> quell, you know -- well, you know, it is true people have pretty much always trusted president obama and they liked president obama, even people who didn't vote for him but i, having him make a promise like this that he made over and over and over again i do think has tarnished him and affected him. now, people do have shorter and shorter memories it seems and i think, maybe because information is moving so quickly, so it is certainly possible he will regain some of that but i think it harmed him and harmed him among democrats. it harmed him among people who are typically his very staunchest supporters who really feel that he said something that ended not being true. that affects how people think of you. and it affects, you know, the trust level and if more people are thrown offer the plans it will come up again, right? about, if you like your plan and you can

peggy noonan writes this. their supporters should recognize an opportunity when it appears. they suffer from a reputation of selfishness. they only have to look to their base. thoen lie have to take care of themselves. and do. the republican party must operate nationally and make an impression on a big and various nation of 315 million. there are moments when the tea party has to tug the republicans right. this is a moment when cooperating backing a deal that is better than the absence of a deal would be statesmanlike. the thing about statesmen is they're taken seriously. and it isn't only democrats who would benefit from looking serious. >> what i wrote in my book is it's one thing to get elected in northwest florida congressman and say whatever you want to say. another thing to win the suburbs of philly if you're a republican or the i-4 corridor or all these other swing areas. and peggy is exactly right. what works for tea party congressmen does not always work for presidential candidates and this is a party
