now jeff pegues has more about the f.b.i.'s investigation of michael flynn. >> i, donald john trump, do solemnly swear... >> reporter: within days of president trump taking office, f.b.i. agents interviewed michael flynn about whether he discussed u.s. sanctions with russian ambassador sergey kislyak. the f.b.i.'s counterintelligence unit is leading the investigation, which is also looking at whether flynn and at least one other trump associate were in contact with russian operatives during the 2016 election. mr. trump's former campaign chairman paul manafort had business ties with russian contacts. manafort has denied having any relationship with the russian government. john mclaughlin is former acting c.i.a. director. >> if it turns out that any deals were made, this would be not only unprecedented but would be shocking and would be something that you would have to take active steps to ensure never happens again, and it would leave a permanent stain on this administration. >> reporter: investigators also continued to vet a 3

here's jeff pegues. >> reporter: shortly after the missile launch, photographs posted on social media show mr. trump's national security adviser michael flynn and chief strategist steve bannon gathered around the president in a public dining room. it's not known what they were discussing, but the president and the japanese prime minister read information by camera lights and made phone calls, all while the first lady and others looked on. mar-a-lago club member richard deagazio posted some of the photos on facebook write, "holy moley" and, "wow, center of the action." adam schiff, the top democrat on the house intelligence committee said that if the president was discussing sensitive information it posed a security risk. >> they should have gone to a secure space, been able to talk freely about it, been able to strategize about what the u.s. response would be. none of that happened here. >> reporter: presidents normally receive national security briefings in private, often in the white house situation room or, if they are traveling, in a mobile secure communications facility. presiden

homeland security security jeff pegues has the details. >> reporter: the new guidelines come as u.s. immigration and customs enforcement units have carried out hundreds of deportation operations across the country. authorities will now be able to expedite deportation of any undocumented immigrant in the country for less than two years, immediately return many immigrants captured at the mexican border, and hire 15,000 new border patrol and immigration officers. the guidelines do leave in place an obama-era program that granted work permits to those brought to the country illegally as children. the department of homeland security is also tasked with building president trump's southern border wall, estimated to cost $21 billion. but a report by d.h.s.' internal watchdog questions whether the department is up to the task. >> homeland security has made progress in the last three years, yet faces long-standing, persistent challenges. >> reporter: testifying before congress, inspector general john roth said his review found a 2011 project to strengthen 53 miles of the arizona border was can

jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. >> ninan: the u.s. customs and border protection agency gave an update yesterday on president trump's proposed border wall with mexico. the agency says it will begin accepting construction bids early next month and in april will begin awarding contracts to build the wall. the president also wants to hire another 5,000 border patrol agents. but for now, local law enforcement agencies are being asked to help grld the border. carter evans shows us how all this is playing out in arizona. >> reporter: it happened suddenly. a man desperate for help in the harsh arizona desert. ( speak spanish ). >> okay. >> reporter: after he got some water from pima county sheriff's deputy karl woolridge, we learned that 24-year-old jesus gonsalez had been wandering for four days after crossing the border from mexico 60 miles away. is this unusual? >> not at all. >> reporter: now the department of homeland security would like local officers like deputy woolridge to voluntarily tyke a new role so they can act as immigration o

jeff pegues has more on the russia investigation. >> can you say whether you are aware that anyone whoised your campaign had contacts with russia during the course of the election? >> no, nobody that i know of. >> reporter: president trump was asked by three reporters if any of his campaign staffers were in regular contact with russian operatives during the election. he denied any connections to the kremlin and dismissed the investigation. >> russia is a ruse. i have nothing to do with russia. haven't made a phone call to russia in years. >> reporter: the f.b.i. counter-intelligence unit is investigating whether the trump campaign coordinated with the russian government to undermine the candidacy of hillary clinton. that accusation is found in a 35-page dossier compiled by a former british spy. it singles out former campaign chairman paul manafort and foreign policy adviser carter page. in an interview with cbs news, page acknowledged traveling to russia close to 100 times since 1991. but he denied working with the russian government. >> i've only said hello to a few russian officials

but jeff pegues reports that this is different because some analysts believe they're being pressured to report the results that the white house wants too o hear. >> i'm establishing new vetting measures to keep radical islamic terrorists out of the united states of america. >> reporter: when president trump signed his executive order banning travel from seven predominantly muslim countries, he said he was keeping the country safe from terrorists. but within the department of homeland security, which is charged with carrying out the order, intelligence analysts are still split on the threat. former and current government source say the d.h.s.' intelligence unit is so divided, some employees are considering asking for protection as whistleblowers or hiring lawyers. that's because their conclusion do not match those of the white house. last week, this internal d.h.s. intelligence document was leak toltd media. it determined citizens of the seven band countries were rarely implicated in u.s.-based terrorism. even though the document was prepared by experienced intelligence officers, it w
