we'll have leaders reid and pelosi there. as we wait for those to happen, specifically the news briefing from republican leaders, crystal ball, a democratic strategist and joe watkins, a republican strategist. when we look at what's happening right now, there are four senators out there. we were talking about this earlier. as we look at a compromise, is leader reid going to the white house right now saying i've got at least four, four who did not sign that objection letter to the reid bill. i have four that might be in my pocket or open to being in my pocket. what do you think is going to be said regarding that? >> that is exactly right. reid knows he has a shot at those four. he knows what he needs to get way needs. he needs 60 votes, of course. republicans are saying, you know, the ball is in your court and president obama's court. if if the president will tell you what he is willing to sign and you will move the chain a little bit more toward our side, if you agree to some provisions of mcconnell and some provisions of boe

you could see nancy pelosi's reaction to this. the fact that democrats don't like at that -- have to take about and this is good news. the larger issue for democrats is when it comes to fiscal issues, democrats enter the debate with a lack of credibility. they had been seen as the party of big spending in government. right now, voters are in a position where they want to see less spending. one gets down to specifics, they are more on the side of democrats. the paul ryan plan is very unpopular but the measures the democrats propose like increasing taxes on the wealthy and ending subsidies for corporations is very popular the democrats need to reach a credibility threshold on fiscal issues. they need to be willing to say that we need more government accountability. if they can agree to a down payment and get a boat on the record of cutting spending, it helps them reach that far. they want to move to a larger debate where the public is on their side about priorities and what is the next step. they want to from that republicans want t

leader pelosi has said the same. also said that we must not touch the benefits social security recipients are receiving or that undermine medicare benefits. we have not said that, therefore, they ought to be off the table. i agree, though, with leader pelosi, you just used her quote. social security has not been part of the problem. as a matter of fact, social security up until this year has been, as you well know, chris, providing surpluses which we have used. so social security is not the problem, but we do need to strengthen and make social security sustainable over the long term, but we need to consider social security on its own merits without adversely those getting benefits. the fact is everything needs to be on the table but not every facet of everything should be on the table. we don't think -- i agree with leader pelosi, we don't certainly want to look at reducing health care costs for people or reducing social security benefits because we want to give large tax cuts to the wealthiest in america. that's not
