newt gingrich, dennis astor, and nancy pelosi. and i'm going to end up by talking about some policy implications of an expanded speaker ships -- expanded speakership. the power of the speaker of the house has become much more expensive. with that, let's dive in. why do we study house speaker's overtime? it helps us understand how congress operates today. it also gives us some insights on some current policy debates and why it is congress does some of the things it does in the way it does those things. let's talk about one of our early house speakers, henry clay. who is henry clay? he had several unsuccessful runs for president in 1824, 1832, and 1844. he also had two stents as speaker of the house. he served in the house, the first time from 1811 to 1820, and 1827 to 1830, not as house speaker. he also served in the senate three different times, 1805 to 1807, 1830 to 1843, and 1849 to 1853. he had a long history in american politics. he's a somewhat contradictory character. he was very much partisan, many people say that partisans
