it's hard for flooding not to be on the minds of people on the peninsula and the south bay. as the rain starts to come down. and as kari mentioned, we did get a break over the weekend, but that might not be enough for people to fully recover. people here in palo alto starting to see the rain. we're close to downtown. it's not necessarily pouring just yet, but we are definitely starting to see that wet weather people potentially bracing themselves for the amount of rainfall that we saw in the north bay last week, the russian river surged over the weekend just below moderate flood stage. also over the weekend, authorities confirm a fatality in sonoma county, close to highway 116 and maze canyon road. a car was spotted in a flooded roadway saturday morning. first responders recovered. the man who was in that car, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. over in santa rosa, firefighters pulled another man's body from piner creek, though police say it's not clear if his death was storm related. now, going into the weekend, san francisco got soaked. a flash flood warning went into

the heavier rain is pushing down the peninsula into the east bay. it's pouring for much of the tri valley now, same thing farther down the peninsula and san jose finally picking up some measurable rain the first time in the last few days. everything else has been staying to the north. now you're starting to see that rain shadow of the santa cruz mountains being overcome by the power of the storm. the santa cruz mountain are probably picking up a quarter inch to a half inch of rain an hour near ben lomond. it will take several hours for the last of the heavy rain to end and we'll have lingering showers later tonight. we'll talk more about that and the full forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks, paul. >>> we continue our first alert weather coverage with sooji nam live in downtown yountville tracking the storm's impact on the peninsula today. what's the conditions there right now? >> reporter: that's right. i am here in downtown mountain view. i've been out here all this afternoon. it's been on and off. early in the afternoon it was pretty light rain,

as you can see, there is activity on the peninsula itself. portions of the east bay, but pretty widespread rainfall across the north bay. now, if we zoom in a little bit closer on the north bay, you can actually see the core of the atmospheric river is now really bull's eye up in mendocino and lake counties. so ukiah, over to clear lake areas that are really seeing it coming down heavy, those small streams could get very small and very quickly with the rainfall intensity that we're seeing. you head south of santa rosa and it definitely becomes a little bit less intense by the time you reach the peninsula and the east bay shoreline, we do have light to moderate showers. now, winds are still very much factors gusting as high as 40 miles per hour, especially out along the coastline. 50's for current temperatures, oakland, berkeley, san francisco, each sitting in the mid to upper 50's right now. and as far as our afternoon is concerned, we are going to see a comparatively calm. one that rainfall intensity shifts further northward, which means we

right through the peninsula and south bay. really, the east bay. it's all about you for the next couple of hours while we are starting to see it. lighten up in terms of intensity in the north bay. let me get you more looks at this in our microclimate forecast. and we're going to put a track on all of it. and you'll see not only the rainfall but the wind anywhere from ten to about 35mph coming out of the south. even some gusts up to about 50. we're going to continue to deal with these gusts tonight. so we could have some trees coming down, maybe even some landslide issues where the ground is just so saturated. at this point, as we take you into the current view close up, you'll see this flash flood warning continues here in parts of alameda and contra costa counties, primarily around richmond, berkeley, oakland, down through hayward. there's just a lot of water on the roadways. you may encounter here as you're traveling on 880. so just take it slow tonight. make sure there's plenty of distance between you and that car in front of you. as we put a tr

the peninsula. it is pounding rain now into the south bay as well. been hit hard in the east bay right now. we're getting heavy rain from oakland into san leandro. 8-80 street level radar, san francisco. it is still steady, but as you know, we have had drenching rain across the city from the peninsula, heading all the way down to the santa cruz mountains and even into san jose. it's just a shield of heavy rain. we do have a flash flood warning until 6 p.m. for parts of the east bay this evening, as they are already seeing flash flooding. as you will notice, there are numerous watches, warnings, and advisories across a good chunk of the bay area because of the rain. we're not going to get into all the specifics. let me get you the most important things. flood warning going for the russian river at guerneville. the latest stage it's at 31.71. flood stage is 32ft. it is expected to be at flood stage and exceed that in the next hour. so minor flooding is expected. the russian river at hopland, in the navarro river at navarro. both are under flood warning

try to move down to contra costa, alameda counties in the peninsula by 11:00. still not much at all of anything down there towards san jose. by 1 p.m. we could get some showers down here towards the south bay, but you'll notice it just continues to go up in the north bay. and that's where we could run into problems with this atmospheric river just kind of stalling out up across the north bay. by 5 p.m, it lifts a little more to the north. so not a whole lot here. san francisco southward. and you're still in it. there up towards our northern counties. by 8 p.m. tomorrow, we start to see more of that in the east bay and peninsula, and little to nothing in san jose. but i do think by the time we get into thursday, also, as we head into friday's forecast, we would see this start to swing back around and hit all of the bay area. and that's where we pick up on totals there. south of san francisco as we head into thursday and friday. and then as we head into saturday afternoon, this would start to clear out of here and give us a break. so wrapping this up for now, nor

it's pretty quiet in the east bay, the south bay and the peninsula at that hour. it's a similar story early in the afternoon, and then finally late tonight we'll get a bit of a break as this boundary lifts north before tomorrow. everybody gets in on widespread rain and some wind. we'll show you that coming up in eight minutes. let's check in with gloria. see those drive times this morning? >> if you are driving this morning, get ready for a wet commute. we're already starting to see a lot of incidents pop up, so be very careful out there on the roads this morning. we want to start with the sigalert over in san francisco. this is on eastbound 80. before first street and traffic is moving very slowly here about six miles per hour. all four left lanes are blocked at this time. and the backup is to fifth street. we have this video here that shows you the backup. this is a caltrans video. so it is moving very slowly here. and in oakland, a two car crash just cleared from the northbound 13 connector ramp to highway 24. but there are still some delays in this area becaus

as you can see, some of our heaviest of showers do remain there on the peninsula. cold front itself now moving down into the south bay. so you're starting to see your activity gearing up at this moment. but still widespread light showers at the very least across the bay as this is a cold front, temperatures have actually slid downward for a lot of the day. take a look at our neighbors in the north face. the novas at forty-seven degrees right now. kelsey bill also at 47 and cold enough in lake county. that's some of the higher elevations there actually getting a little snowfall this morning. now, the sierras also seeing some snowfall. so this is an early-season rainmaker and snowmaker. we'll still be holding on to a few south bay showers into the early afternoon. generally starting to calm down by that point. bring a all right, john, thanks for that. those slick conditions we've all morning long for folks traveling out there. >> because of the holiday we haven't seen as much traffic. they bridge right now. you're at 10 minutes. well, if you're taking that san mateo

peninsula.t with some pretty solid moderate shower activity, especially on the peninsula and the south bay this morning, you can see where the very heaviest of rainfall is that is now moving out into the central valley and will make its way up into the sierra converting to snowfall at about 5500 feet and from there will be some heavy snow up in the sierra. all zoom in on a few areas that are looking at some heavier showers this morning. that includes the south end of san francisco, talking neighborhoods like excelsior outer mission, really seeing some heavier showers right now. we also have a pocket of heavier rainfall right there around san mateo working its way just south of the sfo airport, redwood city down towards mountain view. you are looking at some off and on heavier showers and for the south bay after sitting it out until friday last week. you are definitely our most active area, especially once you get down towards morgan hill, the south into san jose seeing some of that heavier stuff

yeah, i was down on the peninsula and those waves were huge and a lot of roads closed for sure. as you know, you never should drive through that. you don't know how deep it is. so we have that and we also have some freezing cold conditions where temperatures have dropped off to near freezing in our east bay and just above freezing parts of the north bay. so temperatures will continue to bottom out. our sun doesn't come up until another 40 minutes or so. 651 sets at 457. just ten hours of daylight. and we do have a little wind out there in parts of the bay. but all the rain once again, the pacific northwest and the tail end of the system will visit us for the second half of the weekend. pretty shot here though, from mount tam, where temperatures are in the 30s, it's certainly been cool and numbers are from the upper 30s. half moon bay, redwood city to low 40s in hayward and 48 san francisco. so that's cold for san francisco. you can see how pretty it is, though, with the sun coming up. 33 santa rosa danville has been down to freezing. 36 petaluma with low 40s in napa. so little w

heaviest rain over the peninsula, east bay, and also right there through the south bay. this has just slammed most of the bay area today. rainfall rates coming down so hard. it was nearly impossible for you to see when you were out there driving in some parts of the bay area. so the first thing i want to get out to you tonight, just be very careful here for some isolated flooding on the roadways. our drainage system is just having a hard time keeping up with this. with those heavy downpours, you'll see those areas in yellow and orange. orange. that's some of the strongest rain that we're tracking. so we still do have two flash flood warnings. this one here in san francisco and san mateo likely will be expiring in the next couple of minutes, as the heaviest rain is moving to the south. but we still have one here in alameda and contra costa counties around berkeley and oakland until 6:00 tonight. due to those heavy rainfall rates. so let's put a track on this. and you can see that heavy rain that's over oakland that's going to continue off into moraga, lafayette also walnu

just off the peninsula.t, san francisco, south san francisco to the left there. that's going to start to work their way in. but this front looks like it's really going to intensify and line up later today across the peninsula. east bay, south bay may even be about 6:00 tonight before it finally arrives. concord has a gust south to 30 miles an hour. there have been some 30 to 40mph. mountain view south at 31 and south at 30. at hayward, and also 30 at half moon bay. there's been gusts 4050 up in the hills, 60s on a lot of the temps here. and that's really warm up in the mountains and windy, windy. i've had gusts to 50 at south lake tahoe airport. there are a lot of the ski resorts are on wind hold. so this is not about snow today. it's about wind and rain. but it will be about snow late tonight and then going into early saturday. although the winter storm warning goes all the way to tuesday, which seems a little unusual, but snow will make it and once it does start to snow and the snow level comes down, then
