making your way up the peninsula. it is very wet right now. and down the east bay shoreline. but as of right now, if you are flying out of sfo, you have a big impact from some heavier rainfall that has made its way right over the airport. don't be surprised at all. if you have delays or even cancellations, it's rainfall continues. well through the next several hours. so through the morning commute, pockets of heavy rain on already saturated soils. that complicates the current situation, which is already proving to have some localized flooding as we move towards your evening commute tonight. not good timing here. you actually see our frontal boundary roaring through with the strongest of winds and some of the heaviest of rains. just before you take to the roads heading home from work. to sup 8 that taking you a little bit longer than normal on a nice, clear day, we will see that continuing to push through. but after that, really after 08:00pm tonight, it's all gone. once that cold front breezes through. we just have a cold and clear evening and

there was on the peninsula pretty good rain.t checked redwood city has had a half inch of rain. atherton's had a half inch of rain. you get in some of the higher elevations. there's been an inch of rain. santa cruz mountains now over two for many bonney dunes over two, ben loman's over two. and you can see there's more on the way. this is a perfect setup. i shouldn't say perfect, but meteorologically wise to get heavy rain, especially in the santa cruz mountains around mount tamalpais, marin county, and also up to the russian river. so far, just just blowing past a lot of these. but look at this. see this cold air to the north filtering in up here. this is kind of the key. this will start to work its way in. and then here comes the strong jet stream. that's where the pilots fly. and that's going to come together tonight. and that will really ramp up the rainfall rates. there will be some big time, maybe half inch, three quarters inch an hour. would not surprise me, especially marin county, north oakland southeast gusting to 32.

the peninsula. dangerous combination of heavy rain and wind triggering a host of hassles and concerns there as well. let's turn things over to marianne favro. she continues our coverage. she's in east palo alto and here now the focus on trying to get some preparation so things don't get worse than what they've already seen. absolutely. i want to show you this. this is the san francisquito creek. and you may remember, in 2003, this creek spilled over its banks and caused major flooding in parts of east palo alto. you can see now it's moving very swiftly. there's also a lot of debris in here, which is why tonight, residents in this area are on high alert. across the peninsula. heavy rains made it much more difficult to get around today, as people dusted off their umbrellas and dashed into stores. here in san carlos, crews worked to make repairs after the storm knocked out power to this traffic signal. we do expect this storm to bring a decent amount of outage activity at this emergency cter in san car

let's shift our attention to the peninsula. now, this evening, the peninsula is getting hit hard with flooding and power outages. in fact, pg&e has an outage map here right now. close to 22,000 people are without power. that includes more than 9000 on the peninsula and about 5000 customers in the south bay. let's bring in nbc's marianne favro, who joins us in east palo alto with the very latest, marianne. raj. one of the big concerns is the san francisquito creek. and take a look here. you can see that the water level is rising quickly. and we've also seen big logs come through. now, this area flooded just a few years ago, which is why residents here are on high alert now. across the peninsula, heavy rains made it very difficult to get around and cause power outages, including some traffic signals in san carlos. pg&e says it has an entire fleet of trucks waiting to respond. the company says it's also beefing up staffing and turning to technology to determine where power may go out next. residents are also preparing by putting o

hit or miss rain on the peninsula as well as the east bay.closer look shows that we are seeing some heavy downpours to start out that morning commute. moving across the san mateo bridge and over toward union city and hayward, and then as well up towards san ramon. so as you're stepping out the door, it's going to be wet. you want to grab the umbrella, but you won't need it later on today, as our high temperatures head for the mid to upper 50s. it will be a cool weekend, but sunny and most of us hitting a high of about 57 tomorrow after a cold morning start. so here's a look at the timeline for the rain with at 8:00, some rain from san francisco to the east bay on southward. but the last little bit of this storm system is moving off towards the south and east. we dry out this weekend and into at least the first part of next week with some cold temperatures, but this next storm system, as it arrives on wednesday, will bring in some widespread rain and also some more sierra snow, possibly even some snow on some of our bay area hills and mountain

we begin this half hour with developing news from the peninsula.gh. police say the officer was ambushed by a gunman in the parking lot of the hillsborough police department. here's a look at the map. it happened yesterday afternoon near floribunda avenue and el camino real, right outside the town's police department. ktvu betty yu is live in hillsborough this morning. that's where authorities are still searching for the suspect. betty? >> that's right. good morning. amber. that suspect is still on the loose this morning. and it's unclear at this time what the motive of the shooting is. police are following leads in this case. as you said, this happened in the rear parking lot here at the hillsborough police station saturday afternoon. there was a huge police presence in this neighborhood as authorities searched for the suspect for several hours yesterday. that search does continue this morning. on saturday, a police helicopter was used and heavily armed officers were seen on the ground from the san mateo sheriff's office and other departments. they

close to half of those are on the peninsula, where people in redwood city are among those in the dark today. pga says its storm outage prediction tool, powered by artificial intelligence, helps the utility calculate where outages are expected to occur. >> is prepared for this storm and our response to it, and we want to make sure that our customers are preparing as well. typically, it's the most of the impacts tend to be on the west side and in the elevated terrains. it's where we see higher winds. and when you combine winds with saturated ground, that's where we tend to see debris flow, potential vegetation failures which could get into our assets. >> the utility is urging customers to be ready for outages with an emergency supply kit containing water, nonperishable food, flashlights and batteries. in san francisco, strong gusty winds made a tree fall in the city this afternoon, destroying a parklet along union street. we captured crews busy removing that tree in front of the blue light bar. took several hours for them this afternoon. it is just some of the damage left behind in this

when the cat showed symptoms, the family took it to peninsula humane society.was clear that the animal wasn't getting better, and humane. reason they euthanize the cat. the cat's body was sent to uc davis for testing. the county was notified monday. bird flu was detected in the animal. it comes after the california department of food and agriculture confirmed the presence of bird flu in a backyard poultry flock, also in san mateo county, when they, you know, sneeze and cough in close proximity to domestic animals, specifically in this case, backyard chickens. they can they can spread the virus. san mateo county says the cat's infection is not related to the backyard flock, but it's unknown how the cat contracted the virus. cats seem to be uniquely susceptible with respect to kind of the domestic species that we have as pets. there's two kind of common scenarios for how we think it's moving into into those domestic cats. one, he says there have been a couple of cases where cats have eaten raw turkey containing the virus. the second one is feral cats or indoor ou

one of the two drivers involved in a deadly street race on the peninsula learns his fate. today, a judge sentenced kyle harrison to eight years in prison. in november 2022, he and a teenage driver, cesar morales, were racing down el camino real in redwood city when morales car crashed into another car with a family of four inside. the parents, greg aman and grace spiridon, were killed instantly. their twin girls, seven years old at the time, miraculously rvived this crash, while harrison received eight years today. morales, who was 17 years old at the time of the crash, was tried as a juvenile. he was sentenced last month to 90 days of home monitoring after being in custody for two years in juvenile hall. tough cuts on the table tonight for san francisco unified. the district is looking to cut $113 million from next year's budget. superintendent maria su says 80% of the district's budget goes to paying staff members. tonight, the board will vote on issuing preliminary layoff notices to 395 certified employees and 164 classified employees. superintendent says more positions

health experts on the peninsula are trying to figure out how a feral cat contracted bird flu. according to the notice from the county of san mateo, a half moon bay cat family, i should say, took in a cat that was showing symptoms. animal control officers later euthanized that cat, but it all comes after state food and agriculture agents recently confirmed the presence of bird flu in a backyard poultry flock somewhere in san mateo county. so should pet owners be concerned? a uc davis veterinarian says that in rare cases, cats have eaten raw turkey containing the virus. but feral cats are outdoor. indoor cats may get it through contact with dead waterfowl. if you fear your pet may have been exposed and is showing signs of illness, you should contact a vet immediately. 610 right now on your friday morning. taking a live look at san francisco. a nice start to our morning. clean. fresh. we're all ready for the weekend. kari. yeah, and we have also had that rainfall throughout the week that is starting to wind down. and it will be a nice weekend, but we are still right now starting
