today hundreds packed into a penn state university ballroom as opponents occasionally drowned out the republican turned democrat. in less than an hour maryland senator ben cardin will host his second town hall meeting this week on the irk of health care reform -- issue of health care reform. we sat down with him yesterday and asked him about why health care reform is necessary and about facing further crowds. >> there's been a lot of information that's been put out that's clearly false. >> reporter: senator ben cardin sits down with eyewitness news for a one on one interview following this. a rowdy town hall meeting at towson university monday. >> let me ask a question. >> reporter: packed with people who oppose current health care reform efforts. >> we have the best health care in the world. >> he says we have the best health care in the world. >> reporter: do we? >> we do. but we need to make it available to more people and make it more affordable. >> reporter: how you can say we have the best health care in the world, though, when our life expectancy is much lower than many industr

constituents, including senator spector of pennsylvania. 400 people attended the meeting at penn state university in pennsylvania. many concerned with the cost of reform. spector said earlier he was impressed that people came well prepared but that people disrupting townhall meetings were not necessarily representative of america. >> when i am with a group of iowa answer, i am on the same level you are on. >> meanwhile the republican had a calm meeting. grass lee, kicked off a series of town halls in iowa. he is one u.s. senator negotiating a bipartisan bill in the senate. and said the negotiation, however, may not produce a bill he can support. >> but president obama held a townhall yesterday trying to clear up some of the rumors about health care reform. but he may have hurt his own cause when he said this. >> another myth that we have been hearing about is this notion that somehow we are going to be cutting your medicare benefits. we are not. aerp would not endorse a bill if it was undermining medicare. >> well, the aarp quickly issued a statement saying the group has not endorsed any of the b

we have state college, which is where penn state university is, that's about 5.8%. but there are pockets all around the state where it's 9%, almost 10%, and those people are really hurting. since december of 2007 the beginning of this recession, pennsylvania has lost 183,000 jobs. so it's significant to the people who lost those jobs or who are on the cutting edge. harley davidson, by big employer here, they're talking about leaving, that would be a substantial hit both to the seek e and to the reality of people being unemployed. >> brown: jean grant in albuquerque ke, any signs leveling out? >> i think what we've got going on here is a couple of things. we've got some significant revenue short falls couple with our state cough first to the tune of 450 million plus. we've got medicaid cuts being proposed about 300 million. we've got unemployment rate still hovering around 6%, so we've been pretty steady. housing has been interesting. one of the local realtor groups here is predicting, we're saying that they've got about 1,000 homes in the area that have come off the

you can go to the community college, you can go to a state university like penn state or if you have got the grades and the money you can go to a private university. this is what a public option will, it will be an opportunity, a choice available to the american public. >> shannon: if the government is setting the rules, with the public option have an unfair advantage against its competitors? >> what the administration has said and i think that the congress will agree on is that there will be a standard set of benefits that have to be available to you and through any of these options and that what we need to do is make sure that, you know, why should a pregnant woman be denied health insurance? that is what happens today with all of private companies. we want to make sure there is some place they can go to. if you don't get admitted to the private college of your choice, you can always go to the state university. we want to make sure that that option is available in healthcare. >> shannon: we will see you back here in september and watch for that rally. >> big march september 13th in
