and penndot is watching the roads closely. as i said, we're seeing rain right now, but i'm told as soon as that switches to snow, plow drivers will begin treating the roads. now, penndot crews are monitoring their 300 traffic cameras in their king of prussia command center, which we visited yesterday. we stopped by to ask what they are doing ahead of today's storm. their plow drivers have done several dry runs of their snow routes. the equipment has been checked. the trucks are filled with salt and brine. penndot hopes a lot of people make their drive ahead of today's storm. we caught up with a few travelers this morning who did just that. why did you guys come home yesterday instead of today? what was your rationale? >> traffic. >> yeah. i was just really worried about traffic. there's been so many times where i leave at 3:00 thinking i'll be okay and then i hit so much traffic going through new york. so, i left at like 7:00 and i still hit a little traffic, but it definitely wasn't as bad. >> reporter: and coming up at 6:00,

what's penndot's game plan? >> reporter: we went to penndot's control and command center yesterday, not far from here at the mid-county toll plaza. and i can tell you that penndot crews have been working for weeks to prepare for the first winter storm. they say as soon as this storm starts, whether it's snow or rain, they will begin treating the roads. here's the mid-county toll plaza. the rain -- you can't say the rain has started, but it is starting to sprinkle, so we are feeling the effects of the storm rolling through. the temperature has dropped significantly since we started our work day. and we're typically out on the roads at this time, and i can tell you, there is a lot more traffic we're seeing on the roads this morning. on our way here, we stopped at a convenience store in conshohocken, caught up with some drivers. here's what they're saying about their travel plans. do you think more people were on the roads yesterday because of the weather we're expecting today? >> yeah, probably. >> that's probably

katy, what's penndot's strategy for this storm? >> reporter: tracy, i can tell you that penndot is keenly aware of how many drivers are relying on them to keep the roads safe today when this storm starts. we are here at the mid-county toll plaza. this is one of the busiest travel days of the year, and i can tell you there are definitely some drivers getting an early start on their travel plans today. there is light rain starting here. it's been off and on. now, we went yesterday to penndot's command center to find out how they're monitoring conditions. they have 300 traffic cameras that they are watching. several people in that room are watching all these traffic cameras, and as soon as the weather rolls in, they tell me they will begin treating the roads. they really hope drivers stay off the roads today with the storm, but if they don't, here's some good advice. >> the safest place for you in a snowstorm is behind a plow. you don't want to ever pass a snowplow, because our blades can be 10 feet wide, which are wider than a truck,

inside penndot's traffic monitoring center cameras will be keeping a close eye on what could become araffic mess. >> it's a major storm coming up the coast where you have a forecast of significant potential snow. >> reporter: with snow expected during rush hour on one of the busiest days of the year penndot is spending this time making sure there's plenty of salt and trucks are in good working condition. if you're traveling by air, airlines like american airlines are doing away with charging you to change your flight. due to the forecast for select cities including philadelphia, travelers with flights on wednesday can change their flights to tuesday or thursday without an additional fee. in fact on the ground, penndot will be trying out this new truck with a wing plow that also has two salt spreaders in the back. >> and basically allowing one truck to cover almost as much as what one truck and a half to two trucks can do. >> reporter: on a day when some people were wearing t-shirts business was brisk at hardware stores as people start stocking up on winter supplies. >> all right, that
