laurene: well, i started at university of pennsylvania as premed.nd i had in my mind that i was going to be a doctor. and so, i -- in addition to work-study and doing my schoolwork, and doing waitressing on the side for pocket money, i also volunteered at the hospital of the university of pennsylvania. and the doctors there were really generous with me and allowed me to scrub in on surgeries, and i was in labor and delivery, and i had all sorts of jobs. what i noticed, however, was the degree of commitment that is required and the narrowing that must happen to be great at that discipline. and so, i questioned whether that was the right field for me to pursue. at the same time, in my work-study job, i was working for penn student agencies. and a few months in, i had an idea for an agency. so, i proposed it to the man who was running it, who was a wharton grad student. and he told me to go write a business plan. he said, "it is a good idea, but you need to write a business plan." so, i wrote up a business plan for what we called parent services agency

>> pennsylvania is always the center of the political universe, as elected say. and i will tell you, what troubles me and what also gives me hope as michael said, at the core of this lie, was this attempt to make people distrust their neighbors. these are the people who actually conduct our elections, you know, you are a local neighbor who gets up at five, 6:00 in the morning, set up the table, and irrespective of your political views or party, signs you in, get you in the booth and allows your voice to be heard. but i think that as we engage with each other, through our faith communities, through communities events, through all of the benign, and not necessarily political ways that folks engage, i hope and i think i see it as i travel around pennsylvania, that people want to believe in community again. they want to have strong communities. and that starts with trusting our elections, interesting the people who step up in an almost all cases, volunteer, to do their civic duty and play the role in sitting at the table for hours on end and allowing our democracy to
