there are several photographs about pennsylvania avenue in the henderson collection. and so they started a set of demonstrations. it was thurgood marshall's first climb was a man who organized this. well, the most well-known and enduring photograph of the pickets on pennsylvania avenue, all of the picketers are women. another photo that i just thought about you'll see upstairs is of a 1942 meeting getting together of voter registration campaign. i hadn't thought about it until i'm sitting here listening, but most of the people getting ready to go into the streets there to organize people and to register them are women. that 1935 membership drive, the most well-known photograph of that is a street corner rally where they had like a flat bed truck and they went around urging people to join the naacp. the person at the mike is a very young juanita jackson. i did an exhibit that i hope you will get out and see it. and aboin 1943, fortunately some was able to get into the city jail because the women's prison was absolutely packed. and i have photographs on that exhibit of

come to appreciate how important it is in the last few weeks when i undertook this book about pennsylvania avenue and back in the day, but beginning in 1950, and the trouble with beginning at any point is that you need context for what came before that point in time, which is already 60 some years ago. so things like these oral histories are invaluable as well as things like the afro archive especially considering that the white press did not cover the black community at all. which is disgraceful, but a sign of those times. but in trying to develop -- to put those times in context in the new century, there are only so many chances you have to talk to people. people get old. they suffer from dementia. they die. there are people you can't talk to anymore about what it was like in the '40s or what it was like running, you know, running a candidate against the pollak machine in the '50s. i was lucky must have to hold on to my own notes from years ago talking to people. talking to people like harry cole, mr. adams. but it is astonishing to me how -- well, i'll just say -- i'm not sure i'm making my po
