you video from the sister station out of philadelphia, this is the pennsylvania turnpike, just car on top of car, on top of van, everything here, you can see it's eastbound on the turnpike, apparently 8:15 this morning. there were a series of car accidents that happened here as we understand it, the initial accident scene happened involving maybe a tractor trailer and several cars. and then several cars were trying to stop to avoid the initial scene. the chopper pilot indicated that he saw 50 to 100 vehicles involve offed in this series of of collisions and then the backups that came after that on the turnpike, there were at least 12 patients taken to area hospitals. 5 of them trauma patients and 7 of them being treated for minor incidents. we will continue to keep an eye on this for you, it will be hours before the pennsylvania turnpike is flowing again just outside philly. back to you. >> looked terrible out there, thank you for that report. you should have an easier time getting around louden county, here is what we found. >> this is a day to clean up and dig out, a lot of the dirt

we were, our team, headed east on the pennsylvania turnpike towards new jersey. there are three accident areas right around where we were, exit 343. the accident was at exit 350. 12-20 vehicles were involved. that's the estimate right now from the state trooper. they have investigators on the scene. we are probably not going to get the exact numbers until this weekend, saturday or sunday. the second accident area was westbound between 351 and 343. two to three cars with involved in that accident, about 10-15 miles behind us was another accident. a medvac helicopter came in and pulled out one person. that injury is nonlife threatening. we did see a local report saying that five of these injuries are hospital trauma cases. now, where we were, we were headed eastbound on the other side. we saw ambulance taking off in the opposite direction. we had official cars trying to squeeze by. everybody was trying to pull over so they could get by on our side. we were asked to turn around. we made our way out of there. the larger trucks aren't going to be able to get out of th

the pennsylvania turnpike was shut down. dozens of cars and trucks as you can see in this tangled mess. traffic was backed up pr miles. the new mayor of new york city taking heat for deciding not to close schools. crews are still working o clear streets and subways after the city took ten inches of snow along with the rain. jonathan hunt, it looks better out there than 24 hours ago. the head of new york city's schools got into some trouble yesterday when she said in the middle of a raging blizzard and sending kids to school that it was a beautiful day in new york. if she said it today, she would be correct. temperatures for the first time comfortably above freezing and the people of new york taking advantage of the winter wonderland that is central park. all going on today as the cleanup continues. the roads moving very well here. not so in other parts of the northeast. you pointed out that nasty pileup on the pennsylvania turnpike and there is still some snow in the far northern reaches of new england where the roads remain

that's when we were on the pennsylvania turnpike. we were heading east towards new jersey and that's when there was about a 100-car pileup. we have since learned that there were individual accidents that led to this pileup. there were as many as 20 of them. it was a very difficult scene for emergency workers to try to get up through those cars. on this turnpike, there are very few exit and on-ramps. of the injured, we know that 30 people were injured, at least five of them serious. we just came from the hospital where five patients were taken. we talked to the hospital people there. they said that one person was admitted unconscious, likely from a head injury but he's since regained consciousness. we're looking to see how things redevelop with them. we also do know that there were no fatalities but it does look like, jake, that the entrance to the turnpike eastbound has reopened. >> margaret, at first authorities were not blaming the weather for this series of accidents? >> reporter: yes. the turnpike officials were denying that weat

the pennsylvania turnpike, as many as 100 vehicles, cars, suvs, tractor-trailers, people out climbingnces. they are all piled up on a stretch of the turnpike near the new jersey state line. and the police are telling us that there are numerous accidents. obviously, they all banged into each other, right? nothing is moving on the eastbound turnpike. apparently the other side is being limited too, because the emergency vehicles got to use it. they've got to get people in, get people out of the hundreds of people are stuck in this mess. cnn's margaret conley, i've got her on the phone. how are they getting even the wreckers into this disaster to try to at least tow out the problematic vehicles? >> reporter: ashleigh, a state trooper described the scene as chaotic. we just got updated information i want to share with you off the top here. there have been at least 16 injuries, people have been taken to various hospitals in the area. five of them are serious. so far, we are not hearing of any fatalities. there are about 100 cars involved in this incident. that's from the pennsylvania police

let's go now to margaret conley near the scene of that huge pile-up on the pennsylvania turnpike. this was an incredible scene. i spoke to you this morning. you were stuck in some of the traffic associated with it. is it all cleaned up? give us the latest? >> john, the turnpike is now open. you can see it here behind me. the lanes are clear. that's the latest from the police. it's been a long messy day otherwise starting at 8:00. we were on that road. we got stuck in traffic. there are about 100 cars that were part of a massive massive pile-up and we learned that there were about 20 separate accidents that contributed to that pile-up. now, i talked to one of the people that was involved in one of those accidents. he was relatal released from th hospital. he said all he saw were brake lights and an wall of cars. his head hit the steering wheel and right now, half of his body is very numb. he says he's a bit shaken up. we were also talking about the reason for these pile-ups. the officials were saying at first it was not attributed to weather but now they are saying that the gun gla

of a four-vehicle accident including two overturned tractor-trailer trucks westbound on the pennsylvania turnpike. that's a long way west of here, but that involved four vehicles in a 65-mile stretch of the pennsylvania turnpike is closed down, we're told on the westbound side, because of that accident. we came upon earlier today two tractor-trailers overturned right on the d.c. beltway because of the snow and ice and that had affected them. i talked to one of the drivers, he didn't want to go on camera, but he said the steering just got away from him. his truck just completely flipped over, went into a ditch. he had to be rescued from that truck. he had some minor injuries to his hands, but he was okay. the other driver of the other vehicle that we came across just minutes earlier than that same thing, a flipped over tractor-trailer truck closed half of the d.c. beltway off for some time. that driver was okay as well, but very treacherous conditions in the d.c. area. earlier today virginia state officials have said in that state overnight and into this morning they got reports of 840 plus crashe

southern pennsylvania, pennsylvania turnpike has been in freezing rain for three to four hours. especially secondary roads untreated will be covered in ice. you're getting periods of sleet. i've even heard of claps of thunder in brooklyn. when it's not as intense, you get freezing rain. it's crunchy. we're worried about the tree limbs. the temperatures are in the 30s and 20s. only areas to avoid, philadelphia, 34. washington, d.c., 34 degrees. we had about a quick three inches of snow in new york city. heavy sleet on top of that. now we'll watch freezing rain for the rest of the morning until it gets above freezing. snowing hard. reports of as much as four inches already near new haven. i-95, a horrible mess. snow plows can't keep up with it. snow totals, clifton, new jersey, already reports of 3 to 4 inches there. you see the difference, new york city we showed you, freezing rain and sleet. it's still snowing in areas of jersey. i think this will be one of the worst morning commutes we've seen in a long time. >> your mid-atlantic map is showing some love to tauson. i like that.

look at the huge pileup on pennsylvania turnpike north of philadelphia. kyw reports there are two crashes involving about 100 vehicles. tarell brown in secaucus, new jersey. >>> i it snowed then moved to rain and sleet and more snow on top of that. that created this thick, heavy, dense snow being blamed for at least three roof collapses across the area this morning. this is traffic along interstate 95, commuters out on the roadway being warned of winter driving conditions. the speed limit has been reduced to 35 miles per hour. nearly 15 inches of snow accumulated in less than 24 hours across parts of new york. snowfall this year has already doubled what it was this time last year. 40 mile-per-hour wind gusts and snowdrifts led to a nasty commute whether walking or driving. on new york's long island, visibility was so poor a woman collided with a train after unknowingly driving her car onto the tracks. it wasn't flight delays that stranded these passengers at newark airport in new jersey. so many tsa agents were unable to make it to work. air travelers wil

slammed the skoets taking a major toll dangerous weather with dangerous pile joups on the pennsylvania turnpike and backing up traffic for miles. our reporter is with the latest. >> gretta, the first reports of accidents came in at 8:00 this morning. we saw major pile-ups and several wrecks in between. as we look at some video of the scene, this happened right in the middle of rush hour forcing officials to close a stretch of the turnpike, drivers tell us the road was icy and they describe it as very slick. we also hear the sun glare may have played a factor. drivers were stranded several hours in the cold on the turnpike waiting for help to arrive. 27 people were taken to the hospital. the good news here is that no one was killed and we hear most of those injuries were minor. up to 50 cars were involved. as we look again at this video, the scene shows cars into cars, just a frightening picture here. tractor-trailers jackknifed and cars beneath trailers. it was 4:00 this afternoon before the turnpike was actually clear and back opened. now back here live at this hour, the turnpike commission is
