cnn's ryan brown is at the pentagon to put this in context for us. ryan?ng sent to congress this week detailing what the pentagon believes to be the number of civilian casualties caused by its military operations in places like iraq, syria, afghanistan and yemen. they say the number is about 499 assessed civilians killed during these military operations over the course of 2017. they do say that 450 additional reports need to be assessed. but these numbers are the first of its kind. the pentagon recently being tasked, last year at the end of the obama administration, tasked with produce ing this report, assessing how many civilians are killed in military operations. now, outside groups, independent monitors put the numbers of civilian killed by u.s. military during these operations at a higher level. pentagon acknowledging it has its own methodologies it reviews every case. this report, first of its kind, and really tracks with what we saw in the first year of the trump administration, there were a series of increased air strikes against isis in places like
