going to ask people in the city of bridgeport, a very poor city i represent, to go with a little bit less heating aid, do not tell me that the pentagon, leon panetta, secretary of defense saying the cuts are catastrophic, we are going to make all of these cuts and sacrifices, but we are going to take this very fortunate group of people and say, you get a pass. that's all i'm saying f we think that the only solution and sometimes listening to the rhetoric you might think some people believe this, the only solution is to quote-unquote, tax the wealthiest, that's part of it, but that is not the only solution. this is a much bigger problem than that and the point that i'm making is simply that that -- asking the very most fortunate people many of whom i represent to come to the table and participate in this great and difficult national project is the right thing to do. host: chicago, good morning to karen, democrats' line. caller: good morning. how you doing? host: go ahead. caller: this is representative himes, i need to ask a couple of questions. why is it that when the republicans come up with an idea be it bad or bad, they all come o

city hall park and have the ceremony they deserve. >> ironically there's been some resistance from the d.o.d. but this is the statement from the pentagon. i'll read it to you. many communities across the country are finding ways to recognize the service and sacrifice of our troops and families. we are encouraged by that and grateful for it. we're not aware of any formal proposals for new york city though we know many new yorkers already work on behalf of returning -- what's going on there? what are they saying? >> i'll take it as this, we're ready to go. they need their cooperation and their help much the mayor tells us publicly he is reaching out to and working with washington. i have to tell you, there's a little bit more going on here, that some people were resistant to do this massive parade. something about security issues or whatever. i think it's a red herring. let's have a parade and honor our heroes and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. let's do it. >> if we can keep derek jeter safe, i think we can keep these guys safe. it costs $5.4 million to have the persian gulf parade. how do you plan on getting that? >> i believe t

pentagon, and eye opening interviews start right now. >> from the global resources of abc news with terry, cynthia, and bill weir in new york city.line, february 27 #, 2011. c-span: so what's your reaction to the donald rumsfeld book? >> guest: well, i think i have seen that or at least parts of that. you mean i know what i think about the book. i like it. c-span: i mean the way it's treated. >> guest: it sounds like it's hype. i guess they want people to watch their television show is why they do it that way. that's not -- the book has been characterized quite differently by other people as a very serious, historical book that people interested in history will read. c-span: what's your reaction in two cases they show you breaking down on camera. what's your reaction to seeing that? >> guest: well, you know, i was -- i don't know what my reaction is. it happened. my wife was terribly sick, almost died at one point, and we've -- my bad had alzheimer's and it's something that's hard to talk about or think about, and those are things that i'm not normally discussing, but she asked the questions, and i answered them as best i could.
