they cleared out all the homeless people living at people's park. then they brought in shipping containers to build a 17-foot-high wall around the pa i theory to keep people away. now, why is this all happing? well, it's part of a decades-old plan really by the university to build housi on this site. these are some renderings now of the project. the university actually wanted to start construction last year, but it was put on hold pending a state supreme court ruling. protesters say they will not allow it to happen without a fight. they don't want to build housing there. they want to keep the park as people's park, a gathering spot. it's been a space for protests and community activism since the late 1960s. those protests continued today. we also witnessed some arrests. >> there's so much good here, and for almost 54 years, activists and community members have kept it a green space for respite. and people have been allowed to go and be just who they want to be in that space. and that is so berkeley and such a beautiful thing. >> we believe that the p

we want to get to the breaking news in the ongoing battle over control of people's park. ley shutdown the area. >> we learned people, protesters have been taken into custody, and today in the bay's thom jensen is live there. tell us what you know. >> reporter: good morning, scott and kris. you can see they are bringing more shipping containers in right now. this is the type of work going on over the next three to four days as they try and close down the park, and then wait for a court ruling before they can begin construction. they did arrest, police did, at least took into custody seven people cited for misdemeanors, trespassing, a couple failures to disperse, and also taken to the north county jail where they will be processed and released in oakland. crews were dismantling structures and this unfolded after midnight when chp and police officers barricaded the streets close to the people's park. protesters have been showing up and clashing with police at times. here's more clearing efforts taking place overnight, and you can see police physically going into tents, and me

but tonight, people's park is off limits to the people. walled it off by double stacking shipping containers. officers swooped in for a midnight takeover, surrounding the park, kicking out campers, and making people come down from tree houses. city and campus police arrested a total of nine people, and the university didn't waste time starting to raise the land. [ chanting ] >> people's park! >> that's a piece of people's history that is known internationally around the world, and it's one of the things that people know berkeley for. >> roads are also blocked off around the park. protesters got as close as they could, facing off with riot police for hours. to really understand why this is such a big deal, you need to go all the way back to the late 1960s. that's when the university first bought the 2.8-acre plot of land to build dorms. it sat as a vacant lot and became a magnet for anti-war protesters who used it for gatherings and demonstrations. but when the university tried to build on it in 1969, protests exploded. one person was killed

so we're about two blocks away from people's park. these barricades are about two blocks in each direction from the park, with a heavy police presence at each of those barricades. we do have some drone video from yesterday showing those shipping containers create a perimeter around much of the park now, but the work is not quite done yet. around midnight wednesday night, police moved in to clear out the park. there were multiple people sleeping in tents, makeshift structures and even in a tree house. seven people refused to leave, so they were arrested for trespassing. four others were arrested later in the day for resisting arrest, try to remove barricades and battery on an officer. there was a rally with a few dozen protesters that lasted throughout the day yesterday. but police here say that protesters dispersed overnight around one in the morning. protesters believe uc berkeley should build housing elsewhere, not in the historic people's park. the university is trying to be prepared to move on construction as soon as they're able t
