georgia's governor sonny perdue is asking president obama for an emergency federal disaster declarationlevel of federal reimbursement as the state tries to help stranded flood victims and at least eight people have died in that flooding including a 15-year-old whose body was found in the river and a toddler who was swept away when the family's trailer was ripped apart by flooding water. in addition to some schools closi closing. joining me on the phone is the director for the m. management agency. give me an update. are people listening some i know people are stranded. in it seems impossible. are people heeding the warnings out there? >> you know what? we're still experiencing a widespread amount of rescue efforts across metro atlanta, so we're advising people to stay at home, if possible, and if they do have to make it out, to avoid any standing water, standing or moving. don't take your chances. turn around and find higher ground or clear road. >> what are your big challenges right now? obviously, the first people keeping safe but what are the other big challenges here? >> the biggest

that was declared by governor sonny perdue earlier today.ad one difficult request for many of the residents here in the affected area. that is to stay away from their homes. as you can imagine those residents right now are anxious to see what's happened to their homes. they're taking a look at these dramatic pictures on television and want to see what's happened to their home. they have to consider it's not safe at this point. there's no utilities. who knows what's inside the home right now because of all the water that has been going through the house. there are seven people, at least seven people have been reported dead because of that. that's including a 2-year-old toddler who was in a mobile home. and because of the high water and because of the power of that water, that water came in, napped that mobile home in half and opened up that home. and basically pushed the father and the son about a mile down the road. and that father eventually lost hold of his son and he was one of the seven fatalities that have been reported now. we still ha

georgia governor sonny perdue has declared a state of emergency in several counties to route the statead for a while. -- is going to be bad for a while. >> the heaviest rain will stay to the west, through the lower mississippi valley. here is what we can expect over the next 48 hours. northern georgia is where we're seeing are flooding pictures coming out of -- that is the hardest hit in the state. just in the northwest pocket, we could see an additional 1 inch to 2 inches. that does not mean we can rule out any downpours. that could further aggravate this system. you can see much of the heavier showers are sitting out west, and i will be the case for several days. but on the radar we see a few showers up in the western pocket, as expected. we are not out of the woods yet, because the forecast for the next several days, taking us into monday, actually, is going to keep a shower chance in there through the weekend. they could have an additional 3 inches to 5 inches. not everyone will get it, but it could be possible. it is still a system to watch. jane? jane: thank you. jon: in new york

governor sonny perdue has asked president alabaobama to declare state of emergency.n dead, another person's injured. the collision happened in phoenix, arizona, just a short time ago. the car was crushed underneath the weight of that bus. there were no kids on the bus at the time of the accident. the phoenix fire department says the bus ran over that car which had two people inside. one passenger died on the scene. a second person, a teenager, was transported to a local trauma center, in serious condition. we'll keep you updated. >>> a standoff is over at the va hospital in chicago. it ended peacefully after the man who barricaded himself inside an exam room surrendered to police. police say they negotiated with him for about seven hours. the emergency room had to be evacuated once the man went inside. luckily no one was hurt here. one witness who was hooked up to an ekg says he saw the armed suspect after he heard a shot. >> the doctor had just got through telling me that i was okay and they were going to give me some medicine. and then they went out of the roomy wo

(announcer) perdue perfect portions. >> reporter: a 24-year-old graduate student walked into this medicalresearch building and into a mystery. more than 70 security cameras are around that facility. one caught this image of annie le going in but she never came back out. she disappeared less than a week before her wedding on sunday, the day she was to be married, police found her body stuffed inside a space inside a wall in the basement of this building. the very building where she was last seen. people who know this building say to get into that area you have to have a security pass leading to tremendous speculation that this might be an inside job. police freely admit they have a lot of evidence, but beyond that they're not saying much. many people admit they are nervous. security has been increasing and police say they do not believe it was, quote, a random killing. but the fact remains a young woman was murdered inside a yale building surrounded by security cameras and locked doors and a week later police have yet to make an arrest. >> reporter: it was last tuesday when annie le, yale

governor sonny perdue declared a state of emergency in 17 counties, asking the president to declare aemptation for people wanting to get back in their neighborhoods and wanting to see what the damage to their homes, but please, please, please safety first. >> the sun has been shining today in north georgia. the first time in a week. even so a good chance for storms will trigger more flooding. susan hendricks joins us from a neighborhood outside of atlanta. how are people holding up, susan? >> reporter: the folks i spoke to seem to have a positive attitude about all this. you mentioned the sun beating down on us. don't let that deceive you. that really tells to story what used to be accessible by car just accessible by boats. the folks who live here really using boats to get their belongings. whatever they can salvage in and out of their homes. i want to introduce you to two brothers who grew up in this area. they're lucky enough that their house is elevated. it's charles and john. charles, you watched this thing literally unfold within hours what did you see. ? >> i started seeing it

governor sonny perdue declared a state of emergency. meantime, georgia i-reporter daniel says video and words alone cannot capture the feeling of seeing familiar neighborhoods covered in eight feet of water. yeah. that's the roads and yards. he says he was especially moved by this rescue when someone brought in the a canoe to help stranded residents in snellville. he calls it an awesome experience to watch everyone working together. after leaving this scene, he and his friends followed the yellow river to check out other areas saying the flooding was beyond anything he ever seen. >>> meanwhile, i-reporter eric brown says the sight of rising water in woodstock, georgia, was overwhelming and frightening and admits it was a bit of an adrenaline rush. this video shows a local breaching dam sweeping along mud and trees. several roads washed out. the damage itself, structural damage. >>> and i-reporter rachel says there are no natural waterfalls in her neighborhood but you couldn't tell by looking at this overflowing lake which created an imp
