lieutenant vincent perez grew up in vernal heights. he went to reardon high school and friends say he loved to restore vintage cars and cruise them down mission street. anthony vialerio grew up in the city. loved to surf, fly gliders and bake sour dough bread. neither firefighter had any children, but they leave behind many family members. >> means a lot to us and the outpouring of support from san franciscans have done for us. we have had firefighters coming, delivering pizza and barbecue, anonymously. it's touching. >> it's a fraternity. we put ourselves on the line all the time. when somebody is lost, you feel it. >> they died battling a house fire in diamond heights last week. they got caught in what's called a flashover, a fire that heated up to more than 1000 degrees. the funeral is said to start here in about a half hour and it is expected to last about two hours. we have security on hand as well as dozens of officers from the san francisco police department. the public is welcome to attend although parking is very difficult. yo

lieutenant vincent perez and firefighter paramedic tony valerio died fighting a blaze in san francisco's diamond heights neighborhood just last week. anne makovec is at st. mary's cathedral where services for men are just about to start. she joins us with more. anne, good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, i'm here at gough and geary, st. mary's cathedral. you can see people lining up at the entrance behind me. thousands of people are here already waiting for the honor guard to escort the caskets down that aisle. about 6,000 people are expected to show up here at the church and it only seats about 2500 so it is going to be standing room only and you can see up there the flags being held between two ladder trucks. the service is set to start at 12:30 this afternoon. now, about an hour ago, a procession began in daly city. the two caskets draped with flags being carried out of the mortuary. the bodies of lieutenant vincent perez and firefighter paramedic tony valerio are being transported by fire engines to st. mary's. they are set to arrive just before 12:30 for that mass to begin. i
