perry, you touched on this. you see somebody like howard schultz trying to influence in a different way. he makes political donations but he is certainly not a huge donor, doesn't have his own pac in the way mayor bloomberg does. what do you think is the possibility of this, though, having some influence? i mean, are people listening? is it that he is a voice in a louder growing sort of message there or is his singular voice important? >> he is a voice in such a big conversation. a few months ago, almost a year ago, rob portman was considered a vice presidential candidate for mitt romney very much opposed to gay marriage. we have seen rob say he is for gay marriage. the shift in this country has been so dramatic and strong on this, we are seeing ceos, hillary clinton, republican senators, republican members of congress, ken melman, ex-republican chair, talked about gay marriage and opposition now being for gay marriage. the court can't ignore how strong the movement in the country, pretty much everyone below 30

let me bring in "usa today's" washington bureau chief, susan page, and perry bacon.to start with paul ryan who laid out a lot of details in this op-ed in the "wall street journal" today. here's part of what he writes. "the truth is, the nation's death is a sign of overreach. government is trying to do too much, and when government does too much, it doesn't do anything well. so a balanced budget is a reasonable goal, because it returns government to its proper limits and focus." this seems, susan, pretty consistent with the position that republicans have had. so is there more a statement of what the republicans want, sort of a show piece here? >> it's interesting, chris, we've seen in the last week or two some better, more bipartisan, conciliatory rhetoric from both sides when it comes to the budget issue. but when it comes to the specific of what both side is proposing, i don't think we've really seen them come closer together. this budget that congressman ryan is putting out today is the same budget that republicans would have put out a year -- in fact, it's a tough

secretary perry actually suggested that we extend invitations to people from around the world that they might benefit from the discussions that we're having. admiral roughhead suggested that his friends from chile had an experience down in their part of the world with an earthquake and thought it would be a good idea for us to hear about the operations that the chilean navy had undertaken for helping out their citizens. we have a panel here today, we actually have two panels we're going to roll through. one is stories from the field, if you will, people's experiences in working in international environments to help promote humanitarian missions. fleet week got involved with a humanitarian mission back in october in the earthquake in van, turkey. there's a heavy kurdish in san francisco and the ... better recover from their event and how to better prepare in the future from the katz traufk event that had taken place would not occur. we got a phone call at the fleet week association to ask if we could help bring together some resources and leet a fact-finding mission and we did that. one
