[laughter] >> right? he's just different from carl. karl is more of a political strategist. jeff is a guy who gets things done and who has put the right people in front of the governor. i would not so much call him the strategist, but he's the guy who is directing traffic and deserves a lot of credit for helping him thus far. >> tell me real quick who do you think is the most formidable potential candidate other than governor perry and how much of a problem is ted cruz in terms of donors if ted cruz does run

how far in the planning stages is governor perry?s there a nucleus around him a real team that could be activated if he decides to run? is he planning a trip to new hampshire in the coming weeks or months? >> he is light years beyond where he was when he jumped in in the summer of 2011 in the last minute. he does have a nucleus he has a team around him and he has been the last few years pairing. he realizes because of his poor performance in the debate that he is to be well-prepared and he is making certain he is well-prepared and understands what is coming at him and that this is a real challenge. i think he is off to a good start and in some ways he's farther along than some others who have had elections they have had to deal with this past year for themselves personally, so that is an advantage for him, but there is ample time for folks who want to think about getting in this and the pace will pick up in the first quarter and second quarter. >> most people who run have their equivalent of karl rove. the person for karl rove -- the

rick perry. but the same type of dynamic is playing out once again. this time, it's attracting nationwide attention. even some christian conservatives to lobby the texas governor to not go through with this one. this time it's a man whose case is famous, because, specifically, he appears to be so obviously and so dramatically mentally ill. he's due to be killed by the state of texas. the list includes like gary bower. it's this big list of pretty well-known conservative act viss who have written to rik perry saying it would be immoral for the government to take this man's life. they're saying that this guy, it would be wrong to kill him. >>> in addition, former texas congressman ron paul, rand paul's dad, he has weighed in specifically on this case telling rand perry that he should stop this execution. a bunch of morning newspapers have done it all across the state. basically, all the major papers in the state, prus a lot of little ones, have editorialized against this specific execution. he kill

what did you think of rick perry 2.0? obviously working very hard to prepare himself for another campaign. but i think if he runs, he's not going to be one of the establishment candidates. jeb bush and chris christie will have that end of the field. he's going to be competing against conservatives. you have ted cruz, bobby jindal of louisiana, governor walker of wisconsin, potentially mike pence of indiana, rand paul, marco rubio. they might be all there in there competing against him. >> in a conservative electorate, which is the people who vote in primaries, not being an establishment candidate is not necessarily a bad thing, right? >> well, that's true. but if he's going to try to position himself to the right of jeb bush, he's got all the other folks to compete against. and some of those will be very formidable candidates, particularly in a place like iowa. he's got a lot of work cut out for him, not just in being able to speak well but convince voters in the grassroots that they should vote for him in a caucus. >> yo
