we know that perry was involved in some way with clark. that's pretty established. >> on the basis of testimony we have received, we have reason to believe that yes, he was involved in efforts to install jeffrey clark at the justice department. and why were they trying to effectively decapitate the leadership of that department? and install clark, and i think there's good reason to believe it's because clark was willing to try to get georgia to withhold its electors. or send an alternate slate. they were developing plans to do that with other states. look, perry has a lot that he could share with congress, and the country. and legally at this point, he's been asked to volunteer. if he refuses, we will have to consider what comes next. >> we should know and that letter, that cher thompson, said he said when mr. clark decided to invoke his fifth amendment rights, he understood we plan to pose questions addressing his interactions with, you among a host of other topics. this is not, he has not declined a subpoena at this point, this was simpl

we mentioned donald trump, jim jordan and scott perry. this block. we might as well talk about alex jones who is suing the january 6th committee in a bid to evade deposition. there's some nbc reporting about this. he says i offered to submit documents and answer written questions but the select committee won't take those. they demand that i have a deposition and i'm not going to go. that's another version of what we've seen from steve bannon and from mark meadows and others. and i guess, clint, i want to focus on what you think the most extreme nut cases here, the most dangerous of the insurrections, are all playing the same game. what do you discern about that game and its long-term strategy? >> that's the info wars.com strategy. i think in this case, it's nothing more than there's not a lot to talk about right now. we got to keep people tuned in. i think everything that would be turned over in a subpoena would be very bad in terms of organization, coordination, financing, alex jones -- some of the reports say he was expected to go to th

perry was not a household tham before november, before january 6th. on the right he was, but he wasn't like jim jordan, he wasn't the face of trump's allies in congress right now. we are learning he was a key figure. and i think it's -- scott perry is emblematic of a huge problem for the republican party going forward. establishment figures like mitch mcconnell in the senate and others in the house who are much more quiet about this worry that figures like perry who are more prone to conspiracy theories are what the republican party is becoming in congress. while that might perhaps be popular among right right now, it might help them win the elections in the mid terms next year, certainly republicans are looking pretty good right there, it raises a question of how the republican party moves forward with this kind of trumpism ethos dominating them. and perry's a marquee figure on that front. >> look, the jim jordan news today is big news. there have been for a year basically people who have been focused on this question this said jim jordan knows somet

in the letter that went to perry lawmakers laid out why they wanted to talk to him.cifically about former justice department official jeffrey clark. now clark when he was at the justice department was very open to using the agency to promote the big lie. and perry actually connected trump and clark at a time when trump was really putting a lot of pressure on the justice department to find evidence that the election was stolen. now, it's not clear at this point if lawmakers will now move to subpoena their colleague. >> and the committee is facing some legal headwinds. alex jones now refusing to comply with the panel. also now suing the committee. what more can you tell us about the lawsuits the committee is facing? >> a lot of litigation swirling this committee. we have seen over a half dozen lawsuits filed calking various aspects of the investigation. as you noted far right-wing media personality and conspiracy theorist alex jones is among the latest to file a lawsuit. he is challenging a subpoena that he has been issued by the committee. and in the suit he interesti

and the panel is now leaving open the possibility that they could subpoena perry.y's request from the committee, it was notable because it was the first lawmaker that the panel reached out to requesting an interview. but on tuesday over twitter, congressman perry from pennsylvania said he is declining the request because he views the committee as illegitimate. hours later the committee fired back and they pointed out that numerous courts have rejected those claims the committee lacks authority. and then they issued somewhat of a veiled threat, saying if fellow members of congress don't cooperate, they will consider seeking the information, quote, using other tools. that signalling possible subpoenas. and this all sets up what could be a serious showdown between republican lawmakers and the january 6th committee. now, congressman scott perry was likely the first lawmaker requested by the committee because he was identified by the senate judiciary committee as being a key player pushing those false election fraud claims. he even pressured justice officials to investi

congressman, first let's talk about congressman scott perry.is interesting, and i feel like almost uncharted waters. i'm trying to wrack my brain for a similar situation in which you had to sort of special impanelled committee who have witnesses who are themselves a member of congress and how to treat that. what is your response to him saying he simply won't cooperate? >> well, there's, you know, precedence certainly for calling members of congress before an investigatory. in the russia investigation we asked a democrat and a republican lawmaker to come in and both agreed to voluntarily. it is extraordinary for a congressman to refuse and you have to ask why is he trying to obstruct the work of the committee, why isn't he willing to volunteer what he knows. he evidently had some role in trying to install jeffrey clark at the top of the justice department, when reportedly there are efforts to use the justice department to get georgia and other states to not send electors or send an alternate slate of electors. he reportedly was also involved in,

perry was just chosen to be the next leader of the house freedom caucus. to discuss his effort to install former justice department official jeffrey clark as acting attorney general. clark expressing willingness it seemed to go along with the president's plan to undermine the election. paula reed has been following. paula, this is an important step. they are summoning one of their own to testify here, albeit voluntarily, do we expect perry to comply? >> it is unclear, jim if they're going to get any new information from perry. but to your point, yes, this significant. it shows the committee is zeroing in on trump allies, even if they're fellow lawmakers. what is unique, this is not a subpoena. this is a letter requesting that their colleague come in and voluntarily cooperate with their investigation. now, in the letter, it is revealed they are specifically interested in efforts to install former justice department official jeffrey clark as acting attorney general. now, clark, during his time at the justice department, he was very open to using that agency

as you heard a spokesperson for rick perry is denying he was the author.ction to the content in there and if there are any legal implications. >> liz cheney gave a shot across the bow in connection with president trump but she named the federal felony that is in play across all of these narratives and these stories. that is obstruction of an ini official proceeding. that's illegal. if jim jordan, whoever was behind the text, if it was rick perry, presumably, the congress and then perhaps the justice department will look into it. if it can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that was an attempt to interfere with the counting of the electoral votes then they could be facing up to 20 years from prison. now, this is a novel fact pattern but i should say one trump appointee just last week, a judge, held that that statue does apply to an insurrectionist in connection with the january 6th carnage on that particular day. this is very, very serious stuff. particularly given we know trump's own attorney general, bill barr had declared the election valid. these texts

people as far removed from trump's orbit as rick perry.tension throughout the republican party of people who were trying to influence mark meadows. suggesting there were ways to over turn the election. this text message appears in documents that mark meadows handhand ed over to the committee. it's around 6,000 records. despite mark meadows handing the documents over himself, he now won't answer questions about things like this. these types of text messages that the house select committee thinks he knows more about. >> speaking of documents, they continue to pour over. i understand you have new reporting on documents from the stop the steal leader. what are in those documents? >> these documents were provided by a central figure here as the house select committee members seek to understand how this all unfolded. he was the subject of a su subpoena. he handed over around 1500 tek text messages and within those communications, he's handed over and testified about whun indications we had with members of congress prior to january 6th. that incl

the november 5th text came from rick perry former energy secretary.ut a few things here, one, it is notable that he would be pushing a strategy to potentially disenfranchise millions of voters after the election. but also, the committee originally said this is from a lawmaker, yet another sort of forced error from the committee. so what's your reaction to this? and what does it mean for the investigation? >> yeah. so, a member of the committee who you said it was from a member of congress, i think it's now corrected the record said that was actually not the case. it's also not surprising that a republican loyalist rick perry or anybody else would be, you know, pushing this idea. because, you know, this is kind of a strategy that was in plain sight anyway, for quite a while, you know, this notion that the vice president, mike pence, could actually have a substantive role, even though it's not correct, kyou know, tht was sort of a strategy point that had been pushed for a long time and derived from the 1876 race between rutherford hayes and samuel tillm

is there any sense they would take the next step of formally subpoenaing perry? >> it's possible.subpoena, only saying they would use other tools at their disposal. as you noted, what's so significant is perry was the first lawmaker who was contacted by the committee as part of this investigation, and his refusal to voluntary cooperate raises questions about whether or not lawmakers will now attempt to subpoena a colleague. some republican lawmakers said targeting a member of the gop would be a step too far. now, in a tweet perry suggested that one of the reasons he didn't want to voluntarily cooperate is he believes the committee is illegitimate and not duly constituted under the u.s. house of representatives. jim, a federal court has already rejected a similar argument about the committee's authority made by former president trump. this is not the only issue or controversy facing investigators. as you noted, there's a lot of on going litigation, over half a dozen lawsuits challenging various aspects of this investigation. in the most recent batch of lawsuits we're seeing people
