nbc's cal perry is inside yosemite for us. cal?> reporter: we wanted to shoi you the anatomy of a back blaze. take i alook at what firefighters are doing this whole area was intentionally set fire to about 16 hours ago they're playing defense against this massive wildfire by intentionally burning sections of the park. again, in the hopes that the main fire won't reach there. this firefighter's putting out some of these hot spots. it's incredibly dangerous work some of these trees can just fall down. we're talking about oak trees. we're talking about pine trees those sequioas are what they're trying to save and it's never been more important to save the sequioas take a listen to what the superintendent of the park told me this weekend. >> why is it important to preserve the trees >> they're among the oldest living things on earth they are iconic for the national park system. they're in a very limited range here in the sierra so you only find them right here on the planet. and they're really threatened by climate change and wildfire.
