that would be perry mason. [laughter] you see, growing up i thought defense attorneys wrote the white horses and were the white hats. you do end --. [laughter] and i thought that all the best things in the criminal justice system or because of a defense attorney and that defense attorneys could right the wrongs and make our system of justice better. so when i was in law school and after i graduated, i started out as a defense attorney. and maybe we should require that for all prosecutors. [applause] i think it makes a difference and i grew up not only with perry but believing as sir william blackstone said, it is better to set to attend a guilty man free than to convict one innocent person. and isn't that what our system of justice is based on? presumption of innocence, burden of proof, proof beyond a reasonable doubt? and how can you have a system of justice that does not work -- let me put it this way, how are you going to pull those principles of you don't have an effective defense attorney? it's impossible.
